Bodies in the Library

Well this will teach me to go to London conferences with that title. My vulnerability with Pred is violent gastroenteritis. It happens without warning, I get a high temperature and have now wound up in A&E twice! This time I got to the conference with a friend and then it started. Thank goodness for stout British Library carrier bags! We had a dash across London in a cab to get me home - cab driver was lovely, offered tissues, not worried about the interior of his cab - fortunately the carrier bag held good. Onto the train, repeat throwing up (onto second bag now), apologised to fellow passengers who were marvellously sympathetic. Arrived at home station, kind guard offered me water. Relieved to be in hospital where I was quickly sorted and the Consultant released me the next day with the kind words ‘ Gastroenteritis virus exacerbated by reduced immune system due to prednisolone. ‘ And for added sparkle ‘When you get home make sure you have sugar and salt.’ Hmm. Now where do I start? 😂.

What a nightmare. You have my sympathy - and what awfully bad luck ...

Thank you - as you see people were kind, as opposed to all we read about in the news where you could be excused for thinking we are all unfeeling and cruel!

Salt and Sugar = salted caramel fudge chocolate.

I tried this and hated it...............give me the salt of the sugar, not just together. 😉🤔

Oh yuk! Thanks for the warning..packet of crisps perhaps? 😂

Don't know about that - but Lindt's Fleur du Sel chocolate is wonderful :)

Just wrote it down.................in between digging in plants in front and now having a b****y..................nothing like it in the windy sun.

Oh no. I had my episode a few weeks ago and it wipes you out. I had sugar and salt in a water and it really helped across the day. My tummy has just about settled. The world is a much better place than we think if we look at newspapers and watch the news. Hope your tummy feels better soon.🌻🤞

Can you remember - there used to be some GOOD news in the papers?

in reply toConstance13

No. Good news doesn't seem to sell newspapers on a day to day basis.

Goodness knows why the media like to depress us every day!!! Then society is worried about depression, bullying, bad behaviour in general. Youngsters think all that is 'normal'!

in reply toConstance13

Yes it normalises all that stuff. That's why I can't read it. I tend to consume my good society things about kindness and good things people do on YouTube. But if you think newspapers bad some YouTube stuff is AWFUL. From titles anyway. I stay away from that too!

Sorry you’ve had your own fun and games. On the plus side I get to recuperate in front of Wimbledon without guilt! 😀

You must have a very strong will power to travel like that, feeling so sick 😷

I swear, I could never have done what you bravely did.

Glad to read you're on the mend. 👍

Thanks Yulik, that’s very kind. Do you know, I didn’t think of doing anything else? I’m bonkers! Thanks for your good wishes 😄

I have gotten that lately and thought it was food poisoning or the flu.Why sugar? Did he tell you how to avoid it?

Hope you’re feeling better.

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina in reply toBaileyw06

It was a lovely lady. actually. 😀. I needed the sugar and salt to replace what I had lost - just for a day or so, back to the old regime after that. There’s not a lot we can do apart from general hygiene and extra care. I do think exposure to children doesn’t help - but it’s worth the hugs and kisses in my book!

Darn this weather related increase in all these awful side illnesses of Pred and PMR!!

Hope you feel more yourself again soon.

What will we do in the future as sickie sufferers when they totally abolish the plastic carrier bag ?

I think my daughter will be putting a sturdy lock on her handbag!😋😂😂😂😘

YuliK profile image
YuliK in reply toBlearyeyed

It's not the plastic bags that bother me. 😱

It's traveling on buses for a long journey and suddenly I need the bathroom.

Not only on buses, it can happen anywhere.

The prednisone has a hold of my 'waterworks'...

😂

Poor you. Sadly with age we are much brighter, resilient and stronger than our bodies. They really should keep up 😉

Thelmarina in reply toBlearyeyed

Thanks. I know! Even in extremis I felt guilty (but grateful) 😟

in reply toBlearyeyed

I hope they don't ban dog poop plastic bags. I dread to think what I would do.

+++++++

I buy the best biodegradable bags. I tried stick and flip but the dog kept bringing the stick back...yuk.

Is this conversation kind to someone recovering from being sick? I tried shutting my eyes but it didn’t work ..😂😂😂

Yes, sincerely hope you’re over that. I have had two episodes this year both taking over two weeks plus to recover completely. Have never had such bad tummy pains beforehand. First time rang GP and was told “just” gastroenteritis and to drink loads of water and fast. For 3/4 days thereafter no food, then on BRAT diet for a week. Was not told, and didn’t know, the connection with Pred and PMR. My education with this condition is expanding rapidly. I am, or was, on 5mg Pred till last week when I had my controversial injection of steroids “to see” what will happen. Still awaiting outcome long term of that.

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina in reply toMarjorie237

Oh poor you - it’s so disgusting. I had a strong stomach pre Pred so it came as a bit of a shock! You do have to be careful and go to A&E if you keep throwing up as your system can get into trouble if Pred is cut short.

Just had to add to dialogue because I went to the Bodies from the Library conference too on Saturday! For me it was the anniversary of acknowledging I had to get to the GP because how I was feeling was intolerable - I could not walk to the underground etc. PMR was diagnosed a week later.

This year I at least knew what to expect of myself - and I did inwardly laugh when being given directions I was told ' it's a 6 minute walk' .....not for me I'm afraid!

I left for home after lunch knowing I had pushed myself enough. Shame cos there were some promising talks to come...

But poor you - how absolutely dreadful and on such a hot day!

Perhaps next year we should gather under a PMR banner at the British Library! Or Steroids united!

Hope you are feeling better now.

PS for those who wonder what we are talking about: it's an annual conference at the BL for readers etc of crime novels ( hence the title!).

I'm in , I love a good who dunnit!!

I think we could cause quite a stir as a group , as long as they give us some comfy chairs and don't mind when we have to nap after lunch

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina in reply toBlearyeyed

As long as we recline in Art Deco deckchairs and don’t look like potential suspects for a Poirot investigation...😎

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toThelmarina

Dependent on the day , if many of our stories are anything to go by, some of us could look like one of the victims rather than a suspect .

Although I could be as meticulous as Poirot at one time ( I've even dressed as him at a Dressed to Kill Party) these days I look rather more like Miss Marple after a fall through a hedge. The " little grey cells " aren't what they used to be either!!

I am definitely inspired to get myself well enough to take the trip next year though , now , where is my magnifying glass?!!😋

You poor thing! Hugs!

2 bags of crisps, 1/2 box of 'Milk Tray' - Can you still get those? My favourite used to be 'Black Magic'.😂

Much sympathy for your horrible experience ! Ten days ago I was rushed to emergency after fainting. throwing up and defecating much black, old blood. Told I had a gastric ulcer, which was healing itself. Definitely a warning to take acid reduction medicine while on prednisone, also with a meal. I had become negligent and would throw down tablet with just a glass of water when I realized I hadn't taken it. Now I make myself write it all down on a daily basis.

Oh you poor thing! How terrifying! It’s so easy to fall into bad habits when we feel ok. Glad you’re sorted now ....take care! What a business it all is...😟

Oh what bad luck! I too am prone to get that awful stomach virus. Went to the ER once and two years later was able to cope at home with meds from prior event. Wiped me out for two weeks. Take care of yourself ❤️

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina

Thanks - were the meds the anti nauseous pills? The thing that puts me in hospital is my high temperature which accelerates the dehydration. Got to be grateful for the medical care we get 😀 Thank goodness for Wimbledon as I’m having to rest up 🎾 You take care too 😘
