A great morning :)

Well this morning I went to the range with a friend.

Took a few rifles to play with:)

A fer rounds with the Marlin 357, took out a steel plate at 100 meters.

Then over to a semi 22, a nice old 1930's rifle, steel plate took a few hits before falling over again.

Then on to my 223, steel plate wiped out first shot :)

Moved it up the bank so it wouldn't fall, then it was hit after hit on it.

A great few hours, but I'm sure tomorrow will be payback!

Sounds like fun, I think! I know diddly squat about guns.

I’ll bet on your shoulders saying hallo tomorrow! But I suspect it was worth it :)

As soon as I felt it in my shoulder I stopped and I'm sure tomorrow will be painful.

You should have seen the smile on my face, well I'm still smiling now :D

Are you in the uk (brain fog) Do you go to a public rAnge of some kind of members club? Have hated the thought of guns but last couple of years have been wondering about it.

I am sure your arms will have a little grumble but sometimes it's worth it.

ha if he were in the USA he could just shoot out his window or on the street. UGH. GUNS all over this country. killing so many people that now when there is a big school shooting they don't even MENTION the fact there guns readily available..... just talk about the shooter. .. BUT after that downer.. sounds like you have fun JulianJ. !!! and no animals or people were harmed in the making of that fun!!!

in reply to yogabonnie

Yes that's why I have a problem with guns. Fortunately in the UK there are not so many incidences but we have our moments.

I think as my mobility has decreased I wondered if it would be a pastime that wouldn't be too physical and I wondered if I was a good shot. Blame the Olympics...

There are rules for disabled shooting, rests can be used as can shooting from a chair.

As for out moments, not many of them involve licensed guns. Yes, there have been some and in most of them the police had been informed that there are issues around people. I'm a committee member for one of my clubs and we refuse people. We also notify the police as soon as somebody applies to join.

If you are interested, take a look at the NSRA website and their list of clubs.

Match air rifle and pistol is good fun, may only be shot over 10M, but not as easy as people think. If you want the hunting feeling, there is always field target. For people with sight problems there is VI shooting, hard in an understatement, but again those that shoot have great fun and plenty of time to chat :)

in reply to JulianJ

I will do some more research and see where I am.

Some of the rules over in the USA are very poor. I would love to be able to have a handgun. The NRA, over there, are way to powerful, but I can't see a way to stop them.

The second amendment is always miss quoted:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Strange how we only hear "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms".

In case you didn't know, this amendment came from our "right" which has since been removed.

The only things hurt where, a steel place, some costa coffe cups, a well shot up road cone and some paper. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun, even forgot about the cold and the rain :)

It’s called the 2nd Ammendment. And it state “The right of the people to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed”

Why is it the second Ammendment? Because the people who wrote the Constitution knew it was secondly important only to what’s in the first.

As for the NRA. Why are WE so powerful? Because WE are made up of members who have one common goal. Maintaining our 2nd Ammendment rights. Note I said RIGHT. Driving is not a right. Owning a home is not a right.

And no. Guns are not the problem. It’s low life scum who think they’re more important than others. That their wants and desires supercede others.

In this country years ago nearly every pick up had a gun rack in it with rifles. Seldom were people shot. Seldom were the pick ups locked. That should tell you that your view of the problem is made from a point of ignorance.

Oh no!! There goes another gun marching down the street randomly shooting. Ohhh. That’s not possible?? Really??

Guns save lives every day but you never hear about it as it is not politically correct.

Yes, I'm in the UK.

I belong to 2 private clubs.

Shooting is a great sport and just as much fun for men and women. Not the cheapest thing in the world to do, but then what is the cost of pleasure?

My 223 needs a nice scope, that will cost a few pennies, but I may invest in another rifle first, something a little bigger. That will be waving goodbye to £2.5K - £3K

Crikey. I will keep thinking. Enjoy!!

SPRINGFIELD ARMORY M1A LOADED 6.5 CREEDMOOR

If you have not heard, the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber is starting to become kind of a big deal. Like, everyone wants to shoot it and own it in their favorite rifle platforms. So why not get a 6.5 Creedmoor in the stalwart M1A. Too expensive for my tastes but I would love it or the SAINT...

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to daworm

The 6.5 creedmoor is a good round, high barrel wear, but very good long range accuracy. As for the M1A, they are banned in the UK, not aloud full bore semi auto over here.

I'm thinking of a Bergara B14 HMR or BMP, either 308 or 6.5 creedmoor. For the shooting I do the 308 would be fine, not easy to get to 1000m ranges for me.

The Ruger precision looks good as well, but a little more expensive than the Bergara rifles.

Husband getting seriously into clay shooting pretty much coincided with PMR starting up with me. Happy to button for him but he just doesn’t seem to understand why I am content to “have a go” about twice a year(and I scream like a girl when the shotgun goes off-yet to hit anything) ooh my shoulders! I’m not sure how yours will be tomorrow.... maybe it’s technique 😊

Well done JulianJ - I’m happy you had a good morning. Being able to do what you love makes such a difference to coping with PMR. Keep smiling😊 I need to hear posts like this.

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to Maisie1958

I used a bench with a rest to take the weight of the rifles, I can 'gt hold them for off hand shooting now.

Nothing I used today had the recoil of a shotgun, not the price of their cartridges!

I can feel my right shoulder now and it will hurt, but I was the one who decided to have some fun, so no complaints from me on that score :)

If you come down to South Wales I can put you in touch with a good clay instructor. I suspect he would have you using a 20 bore, lighter and easier to handle than a 12 bore. Maybe get hubby to buy one for the couple of times you go with him ;)

I've you read my other posts, you'll know that I don't give advice, but I do try to say what I've done and how I feel. Plenty of silly things get done and said, but I always think about how I feel and what is to come.

At least tomorrow will be auditing the club accounts, no shooting involved!

JulianJ thank you-think your instructor would be more patient than husband! Don’t think I have the hand/eye co-ordination or concentration for shooting. Husband loves it-completely focused and sense of accomplishment. Also nice bunch of people from all walks of life take part locally.

Glad you posted, it’s great to hear people enjoying life, good inspiration for us all. Husband is also into angling and is doing club accounts tomorrow! Treasurer & secretary-I have to send out the magazines and membership cards! 😃

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to Maisie1958

I've done membership secretary and now treasurer.

Totally changed the membership system from several spreadsheets to a single workbook, could really do with a database, but that's beyond me.

Making the cards was a pain to start with, but once I moved to the workbook, I just put a photo into a cell and print the cards, nice and easy!

Then moved the treasure from nothing, well that's what was handed over to me, to a simple double accounting system.

Handed my notice in on Wednesday as I can see me getting to a position where I start to miss stuff or am slow. Don't want to put the club into that situation. At least when I move on we'll have 3 years worth of audited accounts.

Forget the PMR.. just think the shoulder would hurt anyway..PMR or not! and you had FUN!! bottom line. Happiness and a good time! Life is short. Enjoy it and do no harm and we are all home free!

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to yogabonnie

Indeed, happiness is worth so much.

The guy who ownes the range is great, it's to wet to drive to the back of the firing point, even in proper 4x4's, well you don't want to mess the place up! Anyway he allowed me to drive to the front of the firing point to unload and stopped shooting for me to reload the car. That was a real bonus for me as my bench isn't the lightest.

JulianJ -I am only the postman thankfully. Lots of work involved with accounts and memberships. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Best wishes.

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to Maisie1958

I find the accounts easy now, I use GNUCash, but It took me a while to get it setup.

Not as bad as when I started the membership secretaries role, that took me maybe 40 hours a week for the first few months, that was hard work, but made for an easy transfer to the next person.

I have always looked at the roles as something to try and improve, always better to pass on a system that is better than that you take over :)

To everyone who has posted on this thread - this is just a reminder that the forum is about PMR and GCA. While we understand that recreational shooting is acceptable and enjoyable for some people, and a legitimate way to exercise, this thread has taken a direction that is away from health issues to the point where other members are unsure of its appropriateness. If you wish to continue the conversation via private message then please feel free.

I do have to say this Kate: wouldn't it be better to specifically deal with the less appropriate comments? That is how patient.info works - we can discuss anything but comments that stray beyond the discussion into aggressive politics or other practices (like drug use for example) are not allowed and removed together with any other posts that depended on them. It allows considerable breadth of chat about, for example, the use of medical marijuana but as soon as political or "marketing" comments are made they are removed, leaving the general discussion to continue.

Because of my pain I had to give up hiking, and playing my drums and yardwork. But I discovered that I can go sit in a chair and rest my arms on a table or tripod and target shoot. At the range or out in the desert depending on the weather. I can't shoot anything with much recoil or it will hurt so I stick to .22 and 9mm (plus its cheaper) . It is the only thing that brings me enjoyment any longer. It can be a safe and fun hobby.

Just wondering what on earth this has to do with PMR / GCA........

JulianJ profile image
JulianJ in reply to

Everything I do I have to consider my PMR, can I get where I want to go, do what I would like to do etc.

Yesterday was the first time in a year I have managed to get to that place, I had a great time and could ignore my PMR for a bit.

What do you or others want to hear about my PMR journey?

I'm open to tell anything.

Yesterday, after getting home I slept for a few hours, again today after getting home again I slept for about 4 hours. When I get home from work, yes I sleep normally only an hour.

Most Saturdays, my free day off the week, I get up, have breakfast and then sleep for about 5 hours. Life suck, so I post about the stuff that I can do and gives me some pleasure.

If you've read any of my other posts, you'll see that I can now only drive for about 2 hours, If I have to travel further than that I need to take another driver with me.

So you ask "what on earth this has to do PMR / GCA........"

Well GCA, nothing as I don;t suffer from that.

PMR, well it's my life and what I can and can't do.

in reply to JulianJ

Sorry, I understand now. Guess I just got hung up on some of the details. Great that you are able to do some of the things you love. I'm the same with driving and no longer able to visit family for that reason. Good luck, and hope you have many more pleasurable days.

Thank you.

All of my posts are personal. Life is tough and when I get a break I like to share.

Sometimes it can be a tough break, things go wrong other times it can be good.

My daughter is in Uni, 2 hours 15 min drive, I can do that, but no way could I do the return trip now. Last year, not a problem. So I make my son come with me, he can drive back :)

Yesterday was good and the payback I was expecting today has been low.

Currently I'm the treasure for one of the clubs I belong to, I've handed in my notice as I need to have the time for myself, my world is getting smaller, but I want to control how it goes.

Life is hard and emotional. I think that people need all to great advice from this forum, they also deserve some real life stories, how we are doing and what we can and can't do. The little things like having to wake up to move from my back onto my side etc. and the fun stuff, maybe we can help people to open up their worlds by doing something new?
