Mouth sores

Has anyone here developed mouth sores while on prednisone, I've been on 10 mil for over three months with no problems & now started to get some small rough patches on inside of mouth, not sure if it's thrush but any remedies would be so helpful.

Shastring,

I've had mouth sores numerous times over the last fifteen months. The sores are very small with several grouped together. Can't say that I have a cure. I've used mouth wash or salt water to rinse my mouth. Seems they don't last too long. I've never been down to 10mg....but, guess they could come along at any time. Crazy disease. New day....new symptom. :-)

Hope you're doing Ok. How is the testing going ?

Alls well, went to Dr today not thrush and actually was gone by afternoon. It may have been reaction to something  I ate.

If you think it is oral thrush you need to see your GP - there is only one anti-biotic which will treat it.  It's not quite the same as thrush elsewhere!

There are several good mouthwashes to use to us - I use Corsodyl.

Shastring, as Polkadot has advised, do get your mouth checked to rule out oral thrush.  Meanwhile, 'live' yoghurt can help if you don't already eat it.  Also avoid acid fruit and drinks for a while, and only use toothpaste that doesn't contain triclosan which is known to cause mouth ulcers in vulnerable people.  Sensodyne ProNamel is one of the best.

Hi Shastring

Had a couple of bouts of ulcerous mouth early days. As others have said, see GP and get some mouthwash. Mine took two treatments to clear completely. And avoid acid foods.

Same from me - check with the GP it isn't oral thrush and yoghurt should help in the meantime. It is very common to develop oral thrush (and anywhere else really) when you are on pred.

PMRpro thank you again, I swear what would I do here without all of you. Each new day brings a new question. I mentioned the other day that the Opthomologist said my eye pressure was borderline, which can become glaucoma, he said prednisone can do this. Have you ever heard this?

This is something I've had experience with so have confidence answering. Within three months of staring Pred., I was diagnosed with both glaucoma and cataracts. Am, now, using nightly drops for the glaucoma. My pressure wasn't overly high but wasn't considered stable. Just another problem to deal with. I'll have cataract surgery once I'm able to taper the Pred. to a reasonable level. I believe it's all quite common.

Yes, raised eye pressures is one possible side effect of pred and we should have pressures checked every year and then monitored if they start to rise. Raised eye pressure on its own is not glaucoma - there are a couple of other things that have to happen as well for it to be called that - and they keep an eye on it until it gets to a certain level. Then they use eye drops to manage it - they wait because some people don't get that high and the drops are a bit of a pain and have side effects too.

Celtic had raised eye pressures - sure she'll comment at some point.

I have had thrush and the treatment was a mycostatin mouth rinse and swallow.  It took 3 refills(about a month's worth) for it to work this time around.  While waiting to see my GP about it I used a salt water rinse which was soothing.  If it is from a too acid condition in the mouth,  someone on a GCA site posted this as working for her :

⅓ Teaspoons Baking Soda

2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice or Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

DIRECTIONS

Mix everything together. The mixture will start to fizz.

Wait until the fizzing stops and add 8 ounces of water.

Drink the mixture in one sitting.

This remedy with help to balance pH levels in the body. It will also help with stomach acid and reduce acidosis.

Best to check it out with your doctor though of course.

Cheers

I just went to a new doctor and she said I had thrush from the prednisone.  No-one , except the dentist, had checked my mouth before.  She put me on fluconazole 100 mg. and it cleared up. It was a two week supply.
