Hiya Jtxx.

Actually no I don't.

I did when I first started on the urso Dec 2010 but within couple mths had all settled so put that down to a temp side-effect on starting urso.

Ta. Maybe just side effects of drugs. X

Yes I do. I only take synthroid so in my case not the drugs.

HI Jt yes I have the same and also I don't want to eat or It doesn't stay where it should, but I have just taken a week off urso and felt great, so with me I think it's the urso thats doing it, well it must be as I don't take anything else.

I take Omeprazole as I am on Azathioprine which makes me have indigestion , nausea and reflux. This has helped the burping. Maybe the wind below is the Urso then or just another wonderful symptom of PBC. Ta x

I take Nexium for reflux, no burping problem, but can have nausea no matter what I eat at times. Do have the "wind problem" and uncomfortable bowels. Could be the ursodiol, I have taken it for 9 yrs now.

Do you remember if you had the "wind problem" before you started taking Urso 9yrs ago? x

Actually it has been a problem for the last couple of years. A few weeks back and I had to take an antibotic, predisone, and had started an increase in the ursodiol. That caused nausea and very rumbling bowels. This is about the time my Dr. had shown me a report back from my MRI, which stated I had a collaspe of the small intestine. But endoscopy showed nothing other than the reflux problem.

Sorry to hear about your small intestine. Are they going to do anything to fix it or is it something you can live with? x

The puzzling thing is that when my GI Dr. did the endosopy, he didn't find anything, although the report from the MRI said I had a collasped portion of the small intestine.

I used to just take peppermints, then I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis, which is sometimes painful. So no longer worry about 'burping'.

i do! Both up and down....

Also I have a lot of stomach and bowel problems over the past few years. I have recently developed a wheat intolerance. I have tried to find which foods set off the wind but to be honest, Most things I eat, give me gripey lower abdo pains.

I had a sigmoidoscopy last year which showed nothing, but I saw my gastro yesterday and he said if this continues he will want to do a more through examination of my bowel :(

Yes both and they've got worse. Diagnosed 6yrs ago. Specialist always asks about it( see him ever 3 months) so it must be expected due to meds

I have changed my diet radically as I could no longer tolerate groups of food and my guts feel a whole lot better as a result. I have spoken to my consultant about it and he said there will be some foods you can eat and somethings you will struggle with, he said he couldnt tell me what that would be cos it varies but just listen to your body and make adjustments when you make a connection. Subsequently I have given up wholegrain products which make my bladder bleed, wheat only in small quantities and not every day, and eating eggs. I feel sooo much better.

Have you been tested for Celiac Disease? It is another autoimmune disease in which the body can't digest the glutten in wheat.

For me I can't seem to pinpoint what food is cause. Just when I think It's cheese I will eat it and have no wind. Other times I can wake up in the morning with wind. Like most things with PBC so unpredible.

Yes I have been tested for Celiac Disease twice now, and as is so often the case with PBC the tests came back negative both times. My consultant said I must be struggling to digest it and just respond to what your body is telling you. I appreciate identifying intolerances can be difficult. There is a way to test yourself by eliminating all possible culprits and then reintroducing one by one. It is quite a long process. A dietician can help or you can just find the info online.

Just found this written by:

Dr. Palmer is an internationally renowned hepatologist who has been practicing medicine since 1985. Prior to 2012, she maintained perhaps the largest medical practice devoted to liver disease in the United States.

Gas-Related Problems in Those with Hepatitis/Liver Disease

Some people with liver disease complain of increased gas production (flatulence), abdominal bloating, and abdominal distention. These symptoms may stem from malabsorption (impaired absorption) and/or maldigestion (impaired digestion) of certain nutrients by the body. These symptoms are especially likely to occur in people with alcoholic liver disease and cholestatic liver diseases, such as primary biliary cirrhosis. Such symptoms may also be caused by the medications used in the treatment of liver disease. Cholestyramine (Questran) is one example of a medication that is likely to cause increased gas production. Alternatively, flatulence may not be related to a liver disorder at all, but instead may stem from increased consumption of foods that have a tendency to cause gas (see the list on page xx) or from the development of a food intolerance, such as lactose intolerance.

To remedy these symptoms, people can try decreasing their consumption of gas-containing foods and of foods that they are having difficulty digesting. Often, elimination diets are helpful. An elimination diet involves eliminating one food at a time from the diet to determine whether that food is solely responsible for the gas production. It is usually best to begin by eliminating milk and milk products, as they are the foods most commonly not tolerated. One approach that will cut down on the gas-producing potential of fruits is to peel off the skins. Another is to cook fruits and vegetables until they are soft and soggy. Unfortunately, these methods of preparation also significantly reduce the nutritional value of these foods. Finally, taking an anti-gas remedy (typically containing simethicone) can sometimes help.

Foods that can cause gas include:

• Dairy products, such as milk (including skim and low-fat), yogurt, milk chocolate, cheese, and cheese pizza.

• Raw vegetables, especially onions, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower.

• Beans.

• Bagels.

• Pretzels.

• Soups.

• Fruits with skins.

• Dried fruits, such as raisins and prunes.

• Fatty foods.

• Artificial sweeteners, such as sorbitol.

• Carbonated beverages, such as soda.

• Chewing gum.

I suffer from excessive wind, I have been taking Urso and other meds for one year now, it can be very embarrasing and painful if you are in a situation where you can not let go of it. I think it is all the meds and certain foods as well. My best friends have started to call me Gale!!! instead of Mandy.
