We often read on the internet that there is an association with PBC, heart disease, and cancer. There is, of course liver cancer, but there is no additional cancer risks with PBC.

Breast cancer affect about 1 in every 12 woman in the UK.... this means 1 in 12 women but it is important to know that breast cancers and PBC are not linked.

PBC patients run the same risk of heart disease or cancers as the general population. The need to take care of ourselves by not smoking, maintaining healthy weights, exercising, and eating right all contribute to keeping ourselves as healthy as possible.

I would add a couple of things to that. First, I was told by a hepatologist that we have a higher risk of LIVER cancer but only when there is significant liver damage from PBC. Second, as for heart disease, we DO have a likelihood of having high cholesterol. However, our risk of heart disease is not elevated by that. I have had higher than "normal" cholesterol for years and last year had both a carotid artery ultrasound and a cardiac calcium score (CT scan) at my GP's suggestion. Both showed ZERO calcification in my arteries, so the cholesterol has not been causing any negative impact.
