Taking Urso

Gaspereaux profile image
40 Replies

Good morning, everyone!

I have a question about Urso. Is it fine to take your Urso in one dose instead of two? I never forget mornings. I also have no reactions to taking it so far after two and a half months.

I also have a question about bone density tests. I have found a former student who has been diagnosed with PBC and was deficient in vitamin D and is taking supplements. Should she have a bone density test?

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

It's good to know that you are taking one dose in the morning with no problem for so many years. Thank you!

I've been wondering about this for years. I take 2 tabs a day, 500 mg each. I always take the first one in the morning, with breakfast. The second one, I take about 8 hours later, with the meal. So, it is definitely not evenly spaced (in the 24 hour period). But, lately, I've been cheating, and often taking the pills 5-6 hour apart, instead of 8. It's just more convenient sometimes. I don't see the difference, but, I wonder if anybody takes both pills (500 mg each) together in the morning. As far as bone density, I've been doing it for years, every year, because I had osteopenia even before PBC and now it moved to light osteoporosis in spine, so, I continue doing it once a year, just to keep eyes on it. I take calcium supplements and D3 daily, I don't take any osteoporosis meds.

I take 2x500mg just before I go too bed every night I’ve had no problems at all

Thanks so much for letting me know! For how long you've been taking Urso like this? I take two 500 mg tabs at different times because this is what my gastro told me years ago. But, taking them together once a day would be a lot easier.

Lena2011 profile image
Lena2011 in reply to iagra

For just over a year now I’ve taken them together before bed, my gastro also told me too take one in morning and one at night but I watched a one of the live pbc q&a and they said it was ok so I tried it and I’ve been fine!

Sounds good. Only one question, if you don't mind. Urso is supposed to be taken with food or right after a meal. How do you handle that if you take it before bed? Thanks.

Lena2011 in reply to iagra

I have my dinner about 7 every evening then I take tablet anywhere between 11/12 at night and honestly never had a problem 🙂

So, you don't take Ursodiol with food, but, 3-4 hours after your last meal? I'm just trying to make sure I understood it correctly. Thanks!

That’s what I have done for a year yes taken just before I get in too bed every night and I haven’t had any side affects or anything been fine x

I take mine in the morning and before bed - no problems for over 30 years.

I take 4 250 URSO before bedtime and have no problems. I was told that your liver does most of its work of a night so thought l would take mine then. I have dexa scans every 5 years diagnosed with osteopenia 10 years ago and fortunately it hasn’t progressed to osteoporosis. I do weight bearing exercises and changed my diet so hopefully that has helped

iagra in reply to kingsnorth

Does it mean that you don't take Ursodiol with food? You take it several hours after your last meal, before going to bed? Just trying to clarify. Thanks!

l usually have my evening meal around 5pm then take my URSO 1000mg about 8pm. It works for me. I found taking them lunchtime sometimes caused nausea.

Hi there. When I was diagnosed a year ago with PBC, I started 2 x 500 mg of Urso, taking both first thing in the morning. My PBC Specialist said to do what fits in with my daily routine and to take them at the same time each day. So that works for me.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia 5 years ago and have a DEXA bone density scan every 18 months. I take vitamin D every morning and have an injection every 6 months called Denosumab. My bone density results are better now than they were 5 years ago. No osteoporosis just osteopenia.

When I was diagnosed 5 years ago I made lifestyle decisions on the spot. I stopped eating all meat, I have a fish only Mediterranean diet. I exercise daily and take care of myself better than I ever did

Good for you Cascade35, and thank you for the reply. I only want to do the right thing. We’re you diagnosed with the osteopenia through a bone density test? I am having one in the spring when i get home. And thanks for the injection information, i never heard of it. You sure made some great choices! I do a fair amount of exercise (Pickleball, walking through the woods). I haven’t followed the Mediterranean diet, but try to make healthy choices. You sound like you have made all the right decisions! Imagine what a healthy world we would have if everyone did what you are doing!!!!

I’m similar to you l was diagnosed with osteopenia over 15 years ago a recent dexa scan showed it has slightly improved. I do weight bearing exercises and lots of walking drink and eat calcium rich foods eat oily fish and use lots of extra virgin olive oil. I also take a daily cod liver oil supplement.

I take all mine with my evening meal and have done now for many years, this seems to suit my digestion best. There was a recent Q&A hosted by the PBC Foundation with Dr. Andrew Yeoman where he spoke about URSO. You can find it on catch up via the PBC Foundation's You Tube channel or on Facebook if you scroll through their FB page. It is very important also to ensure that you are taking the right amount of URSO relevant to your weight.

It is a good idea when taking vitamin D to ensure that there is vitamin K in your diet as the vitamin K assists vitamin D. If you find yourself to be vitamin D deficient there is a very good spray by Better You which incorporates vitamin K as well.

Having recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis I believe that having regular test to check bone density is a very good idea.

Gaspereaux in reply to butterflyEi

Hi Butterfly, again, never heard of a Vitamin K spray! I will check it out. How is your osteo? Do you take anything for pain?

butterflyEi profile image
butterflyEi in reply to Gaspereaux

It is a vitamin D with K (together) spray by BetterYou. Spray to the inside of the cheek or under the tongue. I try not to take pain medication but follow exercises specifically designed to the different areas. The mantra Movement is Medicine seems to help me.

This is what I buy from Bodykind.co.uk but I am in the UK, I assume you will have similar companies selling vitamins in Canada.

I take 4 x 250 after breakfast and feel fine. Important to take after food. Good luck

Do you take it after food because it will bother your stomach?

Yes I think it might upset your stomach if its empty

The important thig to be aware of is that you should not take calcium supplements at the same time as your urso but at least 4h apart.

Becks880 profile image
Becks880 in reply to Ancolie

Why is that Ancolie?

I didn’t know this and have been taking AdCal D3 with Urso for 3 months.

I’ve been told to take all meds after food. This thread is a revelation!

Oh, I am sorry it took me so long ! When I started to use urso my pharmacist gave me a paper explaining that they should be taken at least 4h appart because it will reduce its effet on urso if taken at the same time.reference.medscape.com/drug...

I think that it is probably better to split over two times but it probably makes very little difference!

In Canada I would think that vitamin D needs supplements, particularly in the winter. I would expect your consultant monitoring to include a Dexascan every 18 to 24 months to check out bone density, as PBC comes with a risk of Osteoporosis.

All the best, William

Hi, I am actually in Florida until May, so getting a bit from the Keys sunshine! Once we reach age 65, which is me this year, you are automatically scheduled for a bone density every year, so i will have that, along with my other fun things, to do when i get home. I did order a sublingual Vitamin D with K, and it is in the mailbox, i just have to go pick it up next time i walk by.

In England.

Gaspereaux profile image
Gaspereaux in reply to zinchunter

I have been to England several times, stayed a couple of nights and did the tourist thing. I am from north eastern New Brunswick, on the east coast of Canada. A very rural area, so i do feel very lucky to have been diagnosed in routine bloodwork. I am praying that I will respond to Urso. At the present time, other than a bit of fatigue now and then, i have no symptoms. Sure hope it is possible to just stay like this if I take my meds, and try to stay fit and healthy. Maybe that is too tall an order….hope not!

I've never been to wild New Brunswick but I worked in a big industrial operation that had a sister plant in Belledune. My son is in Toronto.

I did love Canada and latterly travelled E to W researching every 3 years starting in Valleyfield, then Toronto and up to Timmins, then back and across to Winnipeg and up to Flin Flon, then via Vancouver to Castlegar. Weekend in Vancouver/Victoria, then the second week back across USA starting LA to Mexicali, St Louis, Clarkesville, and finally Pittsburgh. Tiring E to W but great travelling.

Back to PBC. I didn't respond to URSO back in 2006, added bezafibrate which was experimental in those days, and here we are 18 years later! So no problem if you look after your healthy habits. It's 80/65! William

Well, I actually live not far (in wild New Brunswick terms!!!), about 2 hours, from Belldune. My friend worked as a millwright in Belldune. Now, in terms of east to west, you started in the middle!!!! I am about 1000 miles from Toronto. My sister lives in southern Ontario. Wow, congrats on 18 years!

many patients find they need to take their medications when they can make sure all the dose is being taken in a day's time. You need to find what works best for you. I think if you someone already knows they are deficient in Vit C, getting a bone density would be a good baseline to see if certain D supplements or medications are needed. This is often a problem for people who have liver disease.
