Hi just wandering what pbc sufferer's use for dry mouth
Dry mouth : Hi just wandering what pbc... - PBC Foundation
Dry mouth
Prof Jones has suggested that sparkling water is better than plain water. I suck sugar free sweets. I like to sip at cranberry juice and soda water. Ask your pharmacist about Oralieve or similar products for dry mouth. Much depends on how bad it is, I guess.
Hi Barneymiller , have you been diagnosed with sjogrens syndrome? If yes there are a few products Yr gp can help you with like artificial saliva spray , dry mouth toothpaste & mouthwash ( biotene) Salavix sugar free dry mouth relief pastels. If you haven't been diagnosed with sjogrens it is yet another autoimmune disease connected to PBC which also causes dry eye's too due to not producing enough saliva & tears ( of which artificial tears eye drops can help .
In my case sjogrens was picked up by my optician's as about 10 years ago . At the time I wore daily contact lenses & it started to become increasingly difficult to take them out at the end of the day they stuck to my eyeballs or they would crinkle up & flick out and either could be painful , eventually I could no longer tolerate them and went back to wearing glasses unfortunately my lack of tears would also cause bouts of conjunctivitis & contacts didn't help . Also be aware that due to lack of saliva it in turn can elevate tooth decay , Saliva helps prevent tooth decay by neutralising acids produced by bacteria limiting bacterial growth and washing away tooth decay . Saliva also increases Yr ability to taste & makes it easier to chew & swallow in addition, enzymes in saliva aid digestion ... all of the above also became a problem for me & although I did have to visit my dentist every 3 months after my transplant due to slight damage caused during my op & mouth infections but then was able to change to every 6 mths & I'm happy to say im back to 12 monthly visits & although I have lost teeth & now have a plate , many fillings & my gums have receded, the use of a high fluoride toothpaste (prescribed by my dentist to help build up my enamel has helped to slow things down thankfully as not only was it very expensive it was also very distressing and it shattered my confidence . I can't emphasise enough how important it is to take extra special care of Yr gums & teeth if you suffer with a dry mouth or sjogrens syndrome.
I wish you well x
Hi I’ve recently discovered these products.
Gel is great at night. I find the mi t in the mouthwash irritates my mouth but am putting up with it
I had dry mouth before PBC because of glaucoma medical drops. I find chewing gum helps, although it’s a disgusting habit and I never let my kids indulge so karma strikes back.
The cinnamon one from the US seemed to work best.
I tried biotin tooth paste and spray….. I have to drink lots of water and am constantly sipping fluids.
