imuran /Azathioprine

i’ve been started on Imuran/Azathioprine, for arthritis. I will have to be monitored closely, with labs due to my PBC. I was wondering if anyone else had their liver enzymes(inflammation), Get better while on this medication? My hepatologist, and Rheumatologist . Both agree, that if monitored closely it could help with both issues. The hepatologist said sometimes, It will help with inflammation in the liver.

hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected.

Hi Lorraine,

From what I know Imuran is an immunosuppressant, usually prescribed to individuals with Autoimmune Hepatitis. As PBC is also an autoimmune disease of the liver it actually really make sense that this medication can help the body stop attacking the bile ducts, hence improving inflammation.

I also heard that before the introduction of URSO , PBC patients were being treated with prednisone and Imuran.

Wish you well

Hi Lorraine,

Azathioprine is not normally given for PBC but I take it because I have PBC with Autoimmune Hepatitis. It keeps my LFTs stable/ normal. When they tried to get me off it LFTs went haywire, so I went back on it. Hopefully it will help your PBC as well as arthritis.
