What are you taking for postmenopausal osteoporosis?

My Dexascan showed osteoporosis so doc wants me to start meds. Reading about the various options, I'm not excited! It would help to learn others experiences. I'm over 70 with hiatal hernia and history of stomach ulcers.

I have mild osteoporosis in my right femur neck. Endocrinologist prescribed Fosamax and I refused it. Not good on my part but I don’t want more problems than I already have. Decided I wouldn’t risk it.

Thank you. That is sort of how I'm feeling too. However both my hepatologist and primary care are pressuring me to take something. I just hate drugs - usually get all the bad side effects.

Hi

I am feeling the exact same way. Scared of all extra drugs. My consultant doesn’t pressure me although I do worry that my bone health isn’t great

My drs don’t pressure me about it. However, I’m reminded of my risks should I fall.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia. ("Osteopenia, preferably known as "low bone mass" or "low bone density", is a condition in which bone mineral density is low. Because their bones are weaker, people with osteopenia may have a higher risk of fractures, and some people may go on to develop osteoporosis" taken from Wiki).

Since that time I have tried to exercise more and stay healthy. One of the vitamins that I take with this in mind is vitamin D + K spray from BodyKind. There seems to be more and more talk about vitamin D and how important it is for our general health.

Obviously with osteoporosis it is much more advanced but exercise is still very important, if you are worried about falling there are chair exercises and if standing have a high backed chair by you to grab for balance when needed. There are some great resources on YouTube for seniors exercise which can be accessed for free.

Diet is also very important, calcium rich foods were suggested to me at the time of my osteopenia diagnosis.

best wishes

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and offered Alendronic acid to be taken once a week. Not too happy about it as there are lots of warnings about serious side effects (none for me so far). I heard there is the option of an injection annually but was advised that it is not as efficient as the Alendronic acid.

My Hepatologist put me on calcium with vitamin D for osteoporosis.

I take calcium, vitamin D & K. I walk and do yoga. Any weight bearing exercise will help.

I have severe osteoporosis in my spine. I have a yearly infusion of a bisphosphanate. You are allowed three, I’m having my last one soon. I don’t seem to have any side effects. I think I’ll have another Dexa some time later. Good luck.
