Gall bladder removal

I saw a consultant today who said that I needed my gall bladder removed, however I was at greater risk because of having pbc. He explained that there is a risk with post operative bile duct leaks. Has anyone else heard of this?

I had my gall bladder removed many years before PBC was diagnosed. I have ultrasounds every year and my bile ducts are just monitored as they look different now but they’ve been perfectly static throughout the PBC. I’ve not had any additional problems because it was removed.I’d expect they’ll just note this throughout your ongoing monitoring.

My husband had his gall bladder removed the year before he was formally diagnosed with PBC, stage 2/3 at the time. There were no issues. He also had a cancerous tumour removed last summer from his kidney. He is now stage 4 PBC and it did complicate his surgery due to portal hypertension, but it was handled and he is doing well. It’s a good thing your doc is being careful and proactive. Hope it all goes well for you.

I went to the hospital with pain on my right side (the medical reports called it "right flank pain") and the first thing they did was blood tests and an ultrasound. The ultrasound didn't show anything but there were elevated liver enzymes. I changed my diet and the pain went away, so I didn't follow up at the time. A year later the liver numbers were twice as elevated in a check-up related blood test and I found myself on the road to specialists and a PBC diagnosis. Elevated ALP is also indicative of gallstones.

That is really interesting because this is why I was referred for an ultrasound scan in the first place. The surgeon that I saw on Friday said it wasn’t related. My lfts are high I am seeing heptology in May now.

Makes sense. Also an FYI, the drug used to treat PBC, ursodiol, is also used to clear gallstones in people who can’t have the surgery.

Hi i had my gallbladder removed in 2005 then at a routine blood test was sent to hospital in 2010 and i was told i had PBC ALP was 440 and high GGT, they told me my ALP was very high when id had my gallbladder removed but no-one had told me then i was put on urso and my ALP is now down to 170 which is ok and i do get the itch on face arms occasionally but im now waiting to see dermatologist as i have really bad itchy feet with a red rash from big toe one side and all down the opposite side of my feet, both feet have had loads of creams from doctors nothing is working can't wait to get an appointment but have been told waiting list is 10 weeks, so more sleepless nights its very waring not sure if it is to do with PBC or not but eczema psoriasis and dermatitis creams not working so possibly has anyone else had this?.
