Quite a few years back a consultant wanted to remove my gallbladder because I had lots and lots of small gallstones which didnt bother me but I decided not to go with it and a few years later when having a routine ultra sound for my PBC they told me my gallstones had gone??? Where to goodness knows but they had. So I am glad I didnt go for it when they wanted to. But obviously I dont know the reasons behind your sisters problem x

Hello Shirleygreen.

Your gallstones might have been of cholesterol origin. I know our cholesterol levels can be a bit higher at the start of the diagnosis of PBC. Mine were but nothing that caused any alarm bells with the medics.

Urso was originally manufactured for the use of dissolving cholesterol gallstones so perhaps that is what yours were and that is why they have vanished.

I think sometimes it can be more beneficial to make our own decisions on certain things and as you stated, you were totally unaware of having any as they were of no cause of any discomfort. I know when I had my scan back in mid-2010 I was sat waiting with a woman around my age (I was 46 at the time) and she asked me why I was having a scan. I told her I didn't know why, I had tested for abnormal liver function test that continued to slowly rise. She said that she was experiencing a lot of upper quadrant pain and her GP thought she had gallstones.

Hello PrestoVita.

If the gallstones are of a cholesterol formed nature then urso is what was originally used for these. But gallstones can be made up of different compositions. I expect it depends on how they look from a scan and if the patient is experiencing pain from them. (Before my late mother died she was experiencing sharp pain she said after eating. She had a scan and was informed she had gallstones. She died of something not related to this I have to add.)

I did find out that gallstones tend to be more prone in the female population!

I do know a retired lady who had her gallbladder removed several years ago and she did say after her recovery when I saw her that it was done via keyhole surgery so you apparently recover quicker.

Hi Helenclaire, I'm pretty sure there is no natural, proven way to get rid of gallstones, but I do think that many doctors are too quick to jump to surgery as the only solution. It of course depends in large part on your sister's medical indications - there are acute gall bladder attacks that constitute an emergency and surgical intervention can be life-saving. If, on the other hand, her condition is more of a chronic nature and not debilitating, it may be worth asking her doctors if a watch and wait approach might be reasonable. In the meantime, good nutrition and hydration, cut processed foods, alcohol, sugar, possibly wheat, and focus on real, whole foods, lots of fresh veggies. Gallstones do sometimes dissolve or shrink on their own over time. :-)

Hello dianekjs, thank you for the advice, I completely agree with your approach, unfortunately I think that would seem too extreme for her... I'm speaking to a nutritionist next week, so maybe i can look at how we can create an achievable program for her. Unfortunately as she has had 4 painful attacks over the last 16-months, she is now on the surgery waiting list, so it maybe a little too late... however, if we can prevent another attack, whilst dissolving the gallstones, it might be enough to convince her. Lets see... Thank you x

This keyhole operation is really quite human, on the 3. day my sister cooked a great dinner (first day she complained on chest pain due to the air pumped in her tommy (it makes easier to separate different organs, when entering :) ) and today I spoke to a man who told also, he doesn't miss this organ and being very well. There are natural methods for cleaning liver, which can even let gallstones come out, but they are VERY dangerous for those who are ill with liver, or have gallstones, as these can enter into bad places. The gall-liver diet surely will be the best natural thing helping her. Good luck!
