Yoghurt or not? : Hi all... Hope you are all... - PBC Foundation
Yoghurt or not?
Hi, I have never been told to avoid it .
OK thankyou angel 46 xx it's hard to know what you can and can't have sometimes xxx
Your welcome, not sure if that knowledgeable answer for you,I just know I havenāt been told not to xx
OK. I could check in with the people that run the foundation. Xx thanks hun x
I would think that anything that promotes good gut health such as probiotics in yoghurt would be beneficial, where yoghurt would not be so good is when it has been artificially flavoured and sweetened.
I eat a small yoghurt most days for breakfast as I can tolerate it where I canāt tolerate milk. I have to have lactose free and that was suggested by my dietitian when I was diagnosed with IBS and did the elimination diet to see what was causing my symptoms.
I asked my consultant many times now about the diet for PBC, as I kept reading of people who were told to avoid things or have certain things, so it worried me a little. I was told to eat a normal healthy balanced diet.
We all know certain things that are either good or bad for our general health, but Ive never heard of having to remove foods due to PBC. However in end stage liver disease or cirrhosis ,things may be different. So as always, if your worried I would ask your doctors for clarification.
The foundation are covering gut health in February on one of their meetings online think it is around the 21st of February check with them for correct date think it will be really good to watch. You can watch constructions on Thursdays at 2pm on Facebook if you donāt already itās worth it.
Thatās consultations !
My hepatologist said to just follow a normal healthy diet which means limiting processed foods. If you shop around the perimeter of the supermarket, you will likely be eating clean. At least that is how US supermarkets are laid out.
I eat plain yogurt (no sugar added) and just add fresh fruit and sliced almonds. Been making my own in a InstantPot (electronic pressure cooker.)
Hereās a sample of what a typical meal is for me during the week. I allow myself to splurge a bit on the weekend because I enjoy it.
Breakfast - coffee with no sugar added almond milk or evaporated milk. Steel cut oatmeal with blueberries and sliced almonds.
Lunch - clam chowder, garlic bread (made with olive oil and garlic powder)
Dinner - seared tuna steak, quinoa & leafy greens
Snack - orange, plain tea with milk, one piece of chocolate
Hope this helps. I eat a lot of fish, chicken breast and ground turkey as these are lean meats. Tofu is also a staple in my diet.
My doctor also told me to exercise for 30 minutes daily. I actually do more than that most days. My workouts include cardio and at least 2-3x of strength training a week. PBC makes us more susceptible to bone density issues, so it is important to do strength training.
When first diagnose with pbc, my hepatologist ordered a bone density scan to establish a baseline for comparison. Anyway, I also take calcium and vitamin D for my bones daily. My doctor recommended it.
February 23rd 11.30 PBC information on gut health on their Facebook page just been announced hope you can watch live and find some answers or at least catch up later
