Specific pain, Liver or not?

Hi all,

Yesterday whilst sitting in a meeting I had a fairly sudden onset of pain in my upper right side. As it was increasing I excused myself and went for a walk as I thought I was cramp and would relieve from walking it just got more and more severe but did not go into a spasm etc stretching didn't help ,but it did just disappear! It did quite take my breath away, I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance but then gone!!!

On reflect im wondering if this was liver related due to its location, any thoughts would be appreciated

Often 'liver pain' is felt on the right upper quadrant of your abdomen. Although the liver itself feels no pain (it has no nerve endings), the capsule surrounding the liver does feel pain. It is the inflammation of this capsule that causes the discomfort. Sometimes it can become more severe than other times. Stress can bring this on for sure. Heat or ibuprofen might help. The very name of PBC means inflammation of the bile ducts. Hope you feel better.

I get liver discomfort in the upper right side which comes and goes. Sometimes worse when I have eaten something that my body does not like but I have never had it as severe as your description. I believe that gall stones can cause pain in the area. Had you eaten anything before your meeting that might have disagreed with you?

If it happens again seek medical advice. There are many things it can be. Google is other folks opinions, nowt as good as a proffesional opinion if its reacouring pain.Note to self here, take my own advice, having lot of pain similar and thought it was the besifibrate. Got to see doctor if I can get past receptionist and computer says no.

Did you get to see a doctor to find out about the recurring pain?

it is liver related yes. I have cirrhosis now caused by PBC. I used to get these sharp shooting and stabbing pains a lot!! It is not fun! Prayers for you! I still get them to this day. My pain is more and more constant though now.

When I had cirrhosis with advanced liver disease my 'liver' pain was more constant as well. Have you found anything that helps? heat? I wish you well....

Thank you Donna... I wish you well!! Not much helps it’s just kind of there and over learned to deal with it daily… heat helps sometimes at night if it gets really bad. During the day I just deal with the level 3 pain getting more and more used to it.
