Urso causing hairloss! Any treatment?
Hi,
I have been having a lot of hair thinning... not sure if I blame PBC/URSO and/or my up and down thyroid levels.. And getting older too- people tell me that thinning hair is also not uncommon part of aging.. It IS very frustrating. I'm also 3 years in to dx. I know others have posted about thinning hair issues.. Not sure if there's an answer or clear direction.
Hi oranos,
Knowing that Urso could possibly cause hair loss, I asked my hairdresser what she'd recommend if mine started thinning. She mentioned a product called Monat Renew and said that one of her clients had great results with it. I also met another PCBer who uses it as well. However, I think it's one of those things where it probably works for some and not for others and it's quite pricy. There are lots of hair systems out there for thinning hair and a dermatologist could probably help advise you. If no one else chimes in, try googling "products or shampoos for hair loss or hair regrowth" and check the reviews. Good luck and best wishes💕😊
I was diagnosed in 2006 and was prescribed URSO. My hair had always been thin and fine. In 2014 after a very stressful event my itch went ballistic and eventually after about two years the concoction of Rifampicin, colestryramine and sertraline controlled the itch but the trade off has been accelerated loss of hair. I am in my upper 60s so like others it can also be put down to age. I looked into various products and now use a biotin shampoo and conditioner. I read up on Renu hair treatment but it is not recommended once over 65. I recently read that coconut oil was good. As a natural treatment I have started using it every night. two weeks so far, it is to early to say whether it is helping with regrowth but the condition of what I have left it much better.
I have recently seen the specialist and he is referring me to a dermatologist as he does not believe it is the medication. We shall see!
I will follow your post with interest, perhaps someone has found a miracle.
I'd love to hear what the dermatologist has to say... Mine gave me a prescription shampoo called "Sebex"
Other Drs I seen recommended biotin but dermatologist don't believe it does. I still use it because it's good for your skin and nails also. I believe that it does help with that but it doesn't seem to help my hair
I was worried about the amount of hair I was losing but my consultant told me it was nothing to do with my liver or treatment (on urso) told me to see my GP
Some brands of Urso contain sodium laurel sulfate which can cause hair loss. .I wonder if you could check out the ingredients from different labs and find out which brands don't use it? That said it is hard to say if that particular ingredient is the cause of your trouble.

I agree. When first diagnosed I was prescribed URSO by Blue Point. Sometime in 2017 pharmacy switched the manufacturer to Actavis. I began noticing hair loss in 2018. Did some research and discovered that Actavis uses SLS as a filler in their URSO. SLS can cause hair loss. Just this month I switched back to Blue Point.
Thyroid issues can cause hair loss as well. A preponderance of pbc patients also have thyroid issues.
Zinc deficiency can also cause hair loss. I wouldn't recommend a supplement without proof of deficiency. It's worth checking out if you could add more to your diet to support hair growth. I don't eat meat and I do eat nuts (zinc rich) every day. I don't eat dairy but i do have a litre of non dairy milk a day, either oat or almond, non-sweetened, and with calcium, vit D and vit B12 added. My hair falls out but is still growing back, thick but fine which it always was. It's white now, and I use E45 shampoo. My mum had alopecia. I was told that worry causes/exacerbates hair loss. Worry also fires up autoimmune response. Find a way that you enjoy pampering your hair, put your energy into doing the best you can about it, and don't worry because you will make it worse.
