For an official diagnosis of PBC, 2 out of 3 criteria/markers have to be present:
1 - liver function tests = bloods = (lfts) that are abnormal in a manner that is typical of PBC: this 'usually' high ALP, ALT,AST or GGT …. and/or:
2 - the presence of AMAs-M2 (antimitochondrial antibodies) … and/or:
3 - a liver biopsy that clearly shows the presence of PBC in the microscopic tubules of the liver (ultrasounds can only indicate mass scarring)
If only (1) is present, but there are symptoms, then a liver biopsy should be done (often a fibroscan is done first)
If only (2) is present, this - alone - is not enough for a diagnosis of PBC, although annual blood checks are needed. (I've probably had AMS all my life, and still no PBC.
NB About 8% of the UK population have AMAs [= 'blood donor statistics'], and most never get PBC).
Other health signs may be indicative of PBc, but the 3 points above are the 'diagnostic criteria' and there need to be 2 out of 3 of them, for an official diagnosis.
Check out all the official details at the 'PBC Foundation' website (SEE notes to right, above)
Thank u so much. Docs here clueless. They dx me with pbc only off ama m2 elevation and sis with actual pbc. Fibroscan norm. I do agree that i need to b screened for it given my Aunt had it years ago n did not know n was not sucessfully treated. 🙏🏼
