Cholesterol rising

Hi all. Was diagnosed with Pbc last year. Non-symptomatic, discovered during routine bloodwork for physical. Liver enzymes slightly elevated. First pathologist report of liver biopsy was chronic hepatitis. Specialist pathologist report says pbc. Taking urso 300 mg 2x a day. My alt and ast are now within normal range and my all pho’s is 161. But....my cholesterol is up to 250. I eat well and have never had cholesterol issues before. Can it bE related to the disease or the urso? I still struggle believing I even have pbc because I feel fine. Anyone else have cholesterol issues.

Hello, yes according to my specialist the two do go together. Mine is slightly raised, but not enough to be offered medication for it. I’ve been making a big effort with diet and exercise and hopefully can keep it under control that way! Just make sure that your dr keeps an eye on your levels when you have your liver function tests. Also worth asking them to test your vitamin d levels from time to time too. Low Vit d is another potential “benefit” of PBC!

The PBC that is - not a side effect of urso.

I had elevated cholesterol years before PBC & took a statin which kept it normal. Was taken off it when enzymes were elevated until Dr could run tests. About 6 months later I was put back on statin. Now my hdl (good), is up to 73. So I can’t answer if PBC caused your elevated cholesterol. 😊

Yes I agree with Suzielbeau. Raised Cholesterol goes with liver problems.

Try your best to eat healthy and exercise.

I am reducing saturated fats, and sugars and increasing oats, otherwise i am reasonably symptom free.

Good luck to us.

Hi, in PBC people"raised" cholesterol levels are not necessarily and indication of atherosclerosis which is the main cause for concern in raised cholesterol levels in non pbc people. The increased level in us PBCers can be due to the fact that the liver doesn't process fat well. But it may be that your diet has more fat than is ideal for you personally? You could ask your specialist to comment on this and if your breakdown of HDL to LDL is ok?

I know mine is...was always in the low “normal” range then shot up this year. A lot of factors to consider with the different markets for cholesterole to know if you need to be concerned. I do a lot of research and found that if your triglyceride levels are normal and your good cholesterole is high (mine hovers at or just above 100) then it’s most likely the PBC...

I have an article on it I will post for you...it might be in my feed so look there...
