Dont know if it's just me or part of these diseases (AIH & PBC) but I can't seem to tolerate artificial sweeteners. And with Christmas fast approaching I was wondering if anyone could recommend some nice non alcoholic drinks without artificial sweeteners in them.
Thanks

I like drinking Welch’s sparkling grape juice which comes in 3 flavors: red, white & rose. It is a bit too sweet for me so I mix it with seltzer or sparkling water.
agreed with exy21 - san pelligrano is sparkling water with little fruit juice? It can be much cheaper at co-op stores than anywhere else! For me, I'd limit drinking even this - gas bubbles and sodium don't make me feel good. For me, it never helps to have regular 'substitutes' for things that aren't good for me because it usually turns out that the substitutes don't satisfy, they leave a longing for the 'real thing' and often have different additives that are maybe even worse! It isn't easy to break habits but it's do-able and does put some control back in our own hands. If we can live with PBC we can sure do many things we thought we couldn't?!
Many people wouldnt suffer from drinking one measure of alcohol on a rare occasion apparently. But which one of us who would like an alcoholic drink only wants one? Not me! And I'm not going to have "just one" glass of wine to make other people "feel better." Have a very merry Christmas and laugh when you think about how strong you are, how you are not beaten by PBC and not deprived by taking good care of your self!
Seems to be the higher cost drinks that haven't changed to artificial sweetners because of the sugar tax. San Pellegrino is lovely and 5 flavours. Natural sweetners.
Hi, I had San pellegrino the other day and the foil top said new recipe, it no longer has sugar in it, therefore is lower in calories. Now, with my leaky brain, I can't recall if it had artificial sweetener. I suppose it must have, although I didn't notice a massive difference. I always found the lemon one too sweet and would mix with fizzy water.
You can make your own fizzy drinks using carbonated water ( doesn't contain sodium like mineral water), add fruit juice, or squeeze of lemon or lime. I've never had issues with artificial sweetener, so you could add stevia ( natural plant based sweetener) if this would be too sour.
San Pellegrino uses some Stevia (a non-nutritive sweetener) to replace some of the sugar. According to their web site- each 100ml of drink now has less than 5 grams of sugar. It used to be 9 grams per 100ml of drink before Stevia was added. Now mind you 100ml is only 3.38 ounces!! So if you drink 8 ounces (a cup) of it you are getting 10 grams of added sugar. (if my math is right-- i have brain fog.. lol)
I have been watching my "added sugar" now for the last couple years.. I had to make major changes- so I don't end up diabetic. I used to enjoy ginger ale.. but yikes- 30 grams of added sugar in a bottle of ginger ale.
Since I started reading labels I am shocked at how much "added" sugar there is in every product out there. yikes. My doctor has me limiting "added sugars" to less than 26 grams per day.
So I make choices. Moderation is my plan.. but all of us with PBC face so many different challenges with digestion and so forth- people without this crazy disease just take things for granted..
I hope all of us find our own balance and comfort level with food and diet and enjoy life the best we can. Hugs to all.
Hi Auds5 my first appointment with gastroenterologist he told me that i was to avoid pork and saccharine the artificial sweetener as the liver can't digest it . Hope your doing ok . Shaza
