Pbc and dieting

Im new here but not new to pbc. I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I also have lupus and hypothyroidism after radioactive iodine to treat my graves disease. All of which are autoimmune diseases. Im 55 and due to severe disc disease.

I've put on 80 lbs over the last 4 years. Someone told me the keto diet is the best diet for the liver. Does anyone know if this is true?

I am not a great lover of diets but about two years ago I put myself on a long term weight reduction which basically cut out the carbs, bread past and rice. I have a diet now rich in vegetables or salads little red meat but plenty of chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. I also eat nuts and fruit such as bananas, all the berries when in season peaaches and nectarines. I am also learning the benefits of quinoa or using bulgar wheat or couscous as accompaniments to my meals. I no longer have any fizzy drinks but I do have juice in the morning so that I can get the cholestyramine inside me.

I have lost a total of 20 kilos but seem to be stuck at the moment. I have the occasional potato - can never resist chips if they come with a meal when I am out :-).

Research suggests that the best diet for all of us is the mediterranean diet and there is some negative reporting on the keto diet of which I copy a link

I think that the amount of fat needed to pass through the liver would be a definite disbenefit to the liver and it would worry me.

best wishes

Low glycaemic eating seems to work for me without problems. Its slow but sure. Good luck 😀

I saw my endocrinologist recently & had a dicussion on losing weight. She told me to try a 12 hour fast every day which is this new weight loss concept referred to as intermittent fasting.

So basically I only eat within a 12 hour period. For example, if I have breakfast at 8 am, I can only eat until 8pm. After 8 pm, nothing except for water or plain tea (zero calories).

I also eat a well balance low glycemic diet, mostly veggies & fruit with a bit of lean meat. Everyday, I have a ~200 calorie treat to satisfy my sugar cravings. This is so that I won’t feel so deprived that I will binge.

When I was dx'd a couple years ago, my dr. said that one of the BEST things I could do for liver was to lose the belly fat. Belly fat is hard on liver. Fatty liver disease is epidemic in America.

As I was 64 I had let myself get a bit of a belly over time due to menopause and just not "caring" if I fit a size 8 or not anymore.. LOL

I wasn't grossly overweight- I was at 149lbs and I am 5'7"

Cutting out carbs, sugar, my beloved potato chips..(ugh that was hard) I lost 18 pounds. and have held that. not easy at first but once I cut off that "switch" wanting,

craving cookies or potato chips it got easier.

I also walk briskly 30-35 minutes 5 times a week. helps me mentally too.

I eat tons of salad, which I have always loved, I do eat eggs and lean chicken, turkey and lots of veggies.. i eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast.. Luckily for me I don't get "Bored" eating the same things every day.

I lost just over 4 stone in weight by following Slimming World's healthy eating plan. I'd recommend it to anyone!
