I have just received my ama printed from gp surgery. It reads 98.9 iu/ml. Does anyone know what this actually means. I can't get to see gp to ask for a couple of weeks
Thanks

There should be a range that they consider normal on report so that you can interpret. They have that shown in US.
Sorry. Didn't have the actual results to hand. All results as follows
Mitochondrial M2 ABS - 98.9 ui/ml (0.0 -10) assuming this is ama that I have seen mentioned.
Immunoglobulin M level 4.4 g/L (0.5-2.0)
Albumin alanine aminotransferase 55 iu/L
Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase 197 (0.0-33.0)
Serum alkaline phosphate 179 iu/L (30-130)
The rest don't give figures - all they say is potentially abnormal and they are
Anti nuclear factor
HEP-2 nuclear pattern
Parietal cell antibody
Anti smooth antibody
Serum Protein, albumin, globulin and bilirubin all say within normal range
Ferritin 15 ng/ml (22-322)
I am assuming bracket are the normal range. I need to now look up what each of these are /do but does anyone have similar results. Was alone when I saw consultant and mind went blank when he told me I have pbc. Was hoping that next consultant appt in 6 months would say these levels are nothing to worry about, you don't have anything wrong. Am struggling at the moment as I have noone to speak to only my dog - and he doesn't help. Sorry this is so long
Yes...the numbers in (#-#) represent normal range.
I’ll just comment on the ones I am familiar with.
Mitochondrial M2 ABS - 98.9 ui/ml (0.0 -10) => this is indicative of pbc & is very specific to this condition. Urso does not bring this down. Once diagnosed, my hepatologist doesn’t even run this any more.
Immunoglobulin M level 4.4 g/L (0.5-2.0) => also part of having pbc. It will always be out of range. Not part of my blood work now. In the beginning, my doctors ran this quite a bit when they were investigating.
Albumin alanine aminotransferase 55 iu/L=> liver panel, this still gets checked
Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase 197 (0.0-33.0) => this is supplementary to alk phos check, will run high when your alk phos is high usually. Urso can lower this. Not part of regular blood work.
Serum alkaline phosphate 179 iu/L (30-130) => this is alk phos which gets watched when you have pbc. You want this < 200; hepatologist said that people with pbc has this higher. Urso brings this down. You are only slightly higher than norm so that is good.
Anti nuclear factor => these are antibodies so if you have pbc, your body creates antibodies attacking the cellular bile ducts inside the liver
Anti smooth antibody => same as above, this will always be elevated with pbc
Serum Protein, albumin, globulin and bilirubin all say within normal range => all part of liver panel, normal is good. Bilirubin when it is high indicate either blocked large bile ducts (not the cellular ones I mentioned previously) or liver inflammation & will cause you to turn yellow, observed in skin & whites of eyes.
You are not alone. You have all of us who have this condition.
Unfortunately, these labs are indicative of pbc. However, I think your case is mild from the data. If you are a responder to urso, you can get the alk phos lower along with ALT, AST (liver serums) & it will slow the progression of the condition.
My hepatologist assures me that with treatment when it is discovered early on, people with this condition have normal life expectancy vs the general population.
You are going to be just fine. Just try to stay away from processed foods & maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Don’t worry too much. It’s hard but once the reality sets in, you just go on with living your life other than just taking the meds & follow ups with doctor.
I am feeling somewhat confused about my diagnosis. I would like to present my labs here and what like your advise/thoughts. June results were Mitochondrial AB, M2 1:640 positive.Hepatic panel Alkaline Phosphatase. 72 u/L Range 33-130. AST 46 U/L. Range 10-35. u/L. ALT. 43u/L. Range 6-29 u/L. Went off Lipitor due to feet cramping to see if it was causing it. January results. AMA was the same, Alkaline Phosphatase 74u/L, AST 36u/L, ALT 29u/L. Cramping of feet continued, lipid panels went up and now back on Lipitor and Urso 300mg 3 times a day prescribed. I also had a Liver biopsy in the fall and report said suggestive of PBC but it wasn't staged because it was too early to tell. Dr. tested me for sarcoidosis and that was ruled out. Do you feel that my results indicate that I should be on Urso.
Yes; you should be on urso...it is similar to my stats & I am on urso. My ama was slightly higher than yours. I also thought the lipitor was causing the elevated LFT’s. So I stopped it and my LFT’s fluctuated, sometimes normal, sometimes slightly elevated. After 2 years of this, my primary care doctor, also a GI was concerned & wanted a biopsy. I was apprehensive so he sent me to the hepatologist. Hepatologist convinced me to do a biopsy & I was diagnosed.
Thanks for your response. I so appreciate it.
I should also mention that the first pathologist who looked at my biopsy couldn’t diagnose & he deemed result to be inconclusive. My hepatologist then had the hospital send my slides to Columbia Presbyterian, a renowned pathologist there diagnosed me. That pathologist is part of the liver transplant fellowship program there.
I had my liver biopsy at NYU Langone
Thank-you to all who have replied. Can anyone explain the difference between ama results given as iu/ml and titre test results (eg. 1.???) As I mentioned earlier mine reads 98.8 (0-10 being normal range) is mine very high, medium, slightly high? I've Googled for hours trying to find out but all I can find are references to positive and negative
Thanks again x
gwillistexas. Thanks I tried the labstestonline but couldn't find any figures.
