Snacks

What do you guys have as snacks through the day? I've managed to cut out most processed foods and eat loads of fruit. But am finding that I'm starving in the afternoon. Not sure what to have without caving in to junk food.

Hi there. Protein is the best for staving off the hunger pangs. A small handful of nuts. It actually does work. I buy them raw, without salt & dry roast them for 5 mins or so in a hot oven to bring out the flavour & then use them as needed. Just be careful with the fruit. It does have a lot of sugar in it. It is natural sugar of course but still sugar. That means you get a sugar rush when you eat it initially, then a low & you're hungry all over again...Veg would be much better. Hope you find something that works for you!

That must be why I've been enjoying fruit so much lately! Hadn't even thought about the sugar in it lol.

Thanks will try something with protein in it.

Hi angel_b,

How about yoghurts (low fat) . Or maybe whole wheat cracker biscuits? There's quite a variety so not as boring as they sound.

Thanks Emerich.

I actually forgot I had bought crackers in already and of course they've been pushed to the back of the cupboard. Hopefully they'll fill a gap.

Hi Angel_b, an excellent question! I favour rice cakes with no added salt. They're satisfyingly crunchy on their own, or put something low fat on top, like a thin layer of cottage cheese (good to have some protein as others have said) plus some cucumber. I also have a drink to make me feel more full.

Hi, the British liver trust website has a list of healthy foods that are good to eat, ie low fat, sugar and salt. They say its important to eat regularly as if you have liver disease the liver struggles to release stores of glucose when needed so that can be another reason for feeling zapped of energy and hungry. Of course this is the case with advanced illness. If you have no current liver damage then this won't be the case, but eating healthily will definitely keep you well and not put so much strain on the liver. Particularly if you are carrying excess weight. The pbc foundation site must also have diet stuff on it, I haven't looked at it recently?

It sounds like you're being very good, I'm afraid I've got into some very bad eating habits, having got too thin and struggling to 'fancy' any foods. Now I'm mainly eating rubbish things as my consultant said he didn't care what I ate as long as it was something!!

Best wishes

E

Thanks Wass71. Will have a look. I used the one on British liver trust to change my meals but will need to have another look about the snacks. It's hard to change a lifetime of habits.

Hope you manage to finds some foods that you enjoy.
