Hi I have a UTI and have to take antibiotics for 3 months. Seems 2 Gps have different opinions of what I can take. Im really worried now because my liver results are all in the normal scale and I dont want it all to spoil that now. Where is the best place to go to find what I can take safely. Maybe some ideas of what have been safe for you so I can talk to my GP.

I’ve not had an antibiotic alter my labs. None of it is good but sometimes we have no choice. I always drink lots of water to flush it out of my system, hopefully quicker. You have to trust your dr.

I had a UTI couple months ago. Took the drug. Labs one month ago showed my wbc slightly elevated. Couple weeks later I started running 101 temp. I saw Dr and he put me on a broad spectrum antibiotic, one I have literally refused in the past. But this time I knew I had to clear whatever was causing my temp. 10 days of it and I have 4 days left. So please just go with your drs advice. No one can, nor should they, tell you what is safe. Drugs like this disease affect everyone differently. Hope you get your answers from your dr and go with it. 😊 most important, your infection has to be cleared up.

Do NOT take nitrofurantoin this is an antibiotic that can cause problems in a healthy liver so imagine what is can do to one that’s not to great. I was given Nitrofurantoin for a uti and that is what my hepatologist thinks set my PBC off so I would avoid it like the plague.

I’m immunosuppressed with the drugs I am taking and consequently I am prone to UTI’s. I’ve only just recently been alerted that I must not take NITROFURATOIN (despite being given this on numerous occasions in the past). I currently took a urine sample to the doctors which came back negative for bacterial infection despite me feeling unwell and sure I had a UTI. At the weekend, I ended up in Resus at our local A&E having collapsed in the waiting room - the cause? Urisepsis - intravenous antibiotic and saline drip. Trust your instinct

Any chance you could telephone the specialist's secretary and ask for some guidance? The secretary can get a message to the specialist and hopefully be able to call you back.

Hi Crazzy123 . 3 months seems quite a long time to be allocated antibiotics . Can you make sure if your going to be on them for that long it isn't the ones that can destroy all your good bacteria in your stomach to therefore allow CDiff to grow my daughter was on 3 weeks treatment and she ended up in hospital with it . She was very very poorly and i would never want anyone to suffer what she did . Best wishes shaza

I could have typed this myself I get repeated UTI ,Cystitis and now just on antibiotics for Kidney infection I had Protein, Blood and infection in my urine, my Gp prescribed Nitrofurantoin 50mg which has relieved symptoms still awaiting urine results back. I’m due to see GP tomorrow fingers crossed all is well. Like you I was worried about the affect on liver as I struggle with my ALT being high. I’m due Wednesday to have LFT bloods done pre seeing my consultant in Manchester on the 19th not holding much hope for good results but at least there will be a reason if they are high. Get your UTI sorted then attack your bloods try not to stress, I should listen to my own advice. Good luck. Will let you know how mine go good luck a call to PBC foundation is worth considering

Good morning...so sorry you have to deal with a UTI. Not fun at all. I had one a while back that started traveling toward the kidneys. Red flags waving everywhere! Anyway, I cannot take most antibiotics, but I can take Cipro. 7 days knocked it out. As said previously, 3 months seems rather excessive....something I'd be questioning. The pharmacist suggested taking a good probiotic as soon as the course was finished. Also, eat some full strain yogurt, but not with 4 hours of your pills. I used to have a nurse friend who actually used the yogurt in hoo-hoo land and swore by it!!! Well, those are all great for after the barn door is opened, but how about before??? I started using a cranberry capsule daily. Really changed things up. That and increased hydration are great. Add in that I'm now in my 60's and having to deal with all those lovely feminine issues, UTI's can be frequent, so lots of prevention. I started using a probiotic just for women which really was game changer.

Ask questions, do some internet research, and please, let us know how you are doing with all this. Be well

Hiya. The thought of 3 months is def scary but I developed Follicular Cystitis where they give you a weeks worth of antibiotics at twice a day and the rest is once a day as a deterrent. I was prescribed Doxycycline from the doctor who did the investigation but she said check ok with liver from my Gp. The 1st Go said ok to take. However on a go visit for something else another Go said she wasn’t happy about them so changed it to Trimethoprim. Not sure though if these are causing an itch that I didn’t have before. So def going back tomorrow to discuss.

Dr. Mercola Complete Probiotics for Women . Go too Mercola.com. He ships internationally and always has great deals going on. He has a rewards program too which gives you $$ off of future purchase. I love his products, I use his B complex,Magnesium-T, his probiotics. My husband uses his Ubiquinol. Hope that helps. If you want more bands and recommendations, send me a message through chat.

Is that a general all over itch( sign of allergy) or localized itch? Localized can be handled with Boric acid/Aloe/ ACV suppositories. Also gets rid of burning. Smart girl...ask them what is the problem!!!

There is a low oxalate diet group, I think it is a yahoo group. They talk about high oxalate food causes UTI and kidney stones. Maybe worthwhile for you to check it out.

I had sooo many UTIs, hard to count, had many antibiotics as well, then had symptoms but o bacterial grow.

And this doesnt mean you dont have bacteria.

It means they dont know about that bacteria.

Which makes me thinking, maybe same bacteria bresents as some sort of reason for PBC

But coming back to UTI...google D-MANNOSE

ITS A LIFESAVER!!!!

Take it as a preventative from time to time.

Works like a miracle

Plus a herbal tea , will check the spelling later and text

Hi Crazy

I've had UTI's on and off for 25 years with two small bladder operations! Note this was not for leakage's (didnt mean to sound crude), the operations was to ensure my bladder completely emptied! At one point I was on one amoxicillin 250mg for 9 years before the consultant operated again.

I've find drinking a large glass of cranberry juice before bed has stopped the UTI's presently.

I saw my consultant about 4 months ago who suggested boiling pearl barley then drinking the juice before bed. I brought the pearl barley but unfortunately I've not had to revert to this yet as the cranberry juice is doing the trick!

Note having lemon in drinks makes my UTI worse!,

Hope this information is of some help to you! Drink more water too .

Take care and let me know how you get on!

Love Trish. X

Cazzy123- Have you thought about phoning the PBC Foundation about this? If by now you are already on a course of antibiotics and you are concerned, PBC F will be able to give you advice directly from the top hepatologists who support the PBC Foundation. It costs nothing to get this advice or reassurance, and there is none better. Some people say "I didn't like to bother them.." It isn't a bother to them, it's what they do, willingly, expertly, and so caringly. Ring them.
