PBC and Calcium needs.

Hi,

I have PBC, AIH, and bariatric bypass. I am have osteopenia and would like to slow down the bone loss. I take 2,000mg of Vit D and looking for a palatable calcium citrate. I can't abide the chalky tasting chewable. Does any one know of a form of calcium that tastes good. It would be nice some one knew of a gummy vitamin. I can't drink dairy, but I do try to eat vegetables with calcium. I figured osteoporosis is a something everyone here with PBC needs to prevent or at least slow down. We could share our ideas?

Hi Sarah,

Do you know if any Alive calcium bone formula comes in calcium citrate. My doctor says calcium carbonate (for me at least) doesn't get absorbed properly.

Thanks!

Kathy

It says it is from plant sources...calcified red algae seaweed..organic kale spinach...and collard greens. I have had good luck with it. My doctor approved them..blood work has been good.

I am not sure if I answered your question.😊

Thanks for your feed back. It gives me something to check out. I wonder how many of us are being educated from our doctors how important it is to be proactive preventing osteoporosis for people who have PBC. I know I didn't really understand the relationship between PBC and bone loss for the first five years after diagnosis until my scans started to show bone loss. My primary didn't seem too interested in the bone scans. It was my GI doc that said he would explain to my primary how important early preventative treatment is.

Stay as well as you can! :)

Kathy

So true..I asked for the dexa on my own...glad I did. You are so right.

The alive pill is on the bigger side but I honestly do not taste anything. I chose it because of the combination it had together it has a little bit of K and a few other vitamins that help absorption.

I use Viactiv viactiv.com/

If you are in the USA, Kirkland brand at Costco just as good. These are chocolate chews and have added Vit D and K. I take additional Vit D in a tiny gel pill, 1000 mg (also buy it at Costco). Chews taste great, they come in different flavors. You can also find calcium gummies that taste good. Many brands make them now. VitaFusion, Caltrate, etc.

I read that calcium supplements interfere with Urso effectiveness. I punched in all the meds that I am taking on Web MD and that that was their response. Is there any truth to that?

in reply to Ellyne

That is true. My doctor advised me to space out the timing of urso by a few hours with any other meds or supplements. It is also on the bottle of the meds to wait at least 2 hours before taking antacids or calcium.
