Has anyone noticed a difference in their liver health if they eat sugar? I have read to stay away from sugar. How about bread and carbs?

Is sugar bad for pbc?
Hi Vera70
I was diagnosed 2 years ago and have never been told by any of my doctors to change my diet, i do avoid alcohol only have an odd drink now on special occasions as I'm aware my body cant handle it. I eat a normal balanced diet including sugar carbs etc and I'm totally fine. I saw in your previous post you were worried about urso side effects and weight gain i have had none. Try not to worry and live your life as normal, its taken me a while to come to terms with this but now i have its business as usual life goes on. Stay well and positive.

No weight gain for me either and I am too thin!
Everyone is different. I think we all have to find what suits us individually. Some can tolerate sugar some not. I adjusted my diet and felt better for it.
My Doctor told me to try to stay away from carbs, not only for the sugar but because of weight gain. Autoimmune diseases such as PBC can make it really difficult to lose weight, and very easy to gain. Also your body will hold on to all those toxins. When you eat sugar(or anything) or carbs your liver helps basically turn it into energy. Your liver is a big filter, and if it's not working correctly it's really going to have affects on your body. I was also told not to drink AT ALL, and try to stay away from medications as much as possible (except for the things I absolutely need) and definitely no acetaminophen (Tylenol). I guess it is different for every person, but I can't imagine a doctor telling you to live your life normally when you have such a complicated disease as PBC. I know a lot of people say oh it's fine, and you can live a normal life etc. but I have also seen the other side of it as well. My best friends mom actually died of PBC a few years back. I say follow your doctors orders
Hello vera70.
When I was diagnosed December 2010 my hospital consultant never advised me to not eat this or that. He just said to continue as normal (he knew I wasn't a drinker) after I asked him.
Hi, I have been told to take carbohydrates at night to stop muscle wastage, and to cut back on salt and dark chocolate. I am at stage 4 so maybe that is why. I was not told to stop anything before this stage except alcohol which I rarely drank anyway, All the best
I'd try to avoid anything that's hard for the liver to process:
Alcohol
Fat
Sugar
Salt
Additives
Preservatives
People around me eat these things and it's extremely difficult to stay away f on avoid and stop, but I'm trying because my lion de depends on it. People who tell you to relax and enjoy a normal life aren't thinking their way through their advise. My enzymes zoom when I drink alcohol or have a lot of what's on my avoid list. That means liver damage, that means an even shorter life expectancy, more fatigue, more itching. So ignore the happy go lucky "relax and enjoy" advise and do what you can to eat well and exercise for pbc.
I agree now that I am the stage I am, it isnt hard to cut back on things I now realise, and I wish I had before it was too late and I got cirrhosis. Its a shame if people dont take this warning seriously but then again It is their decision.
We need to realize that there are few expert PBC doctors out there. You will actually get a better advise by googling "diet for pbc " and reading the medical articles you find. Feel free to make a summary (with references).
To me, it is rather logical to reduce eating things that requires athe liver to work well. For example, fructose is processed by the liver.
I would say sugar is not good - if I overdo the sugar the dreaded itch returns, if I stay away from it no itch. It would really depend on the state of the liver I guess as I understand it sugar is complex for the liver to breakdown and if you aren't using the calories stores as fat.
Like most I have never been told to change diet or what is best to have and you have to find what suits you but certainly alcohol should be out of the equation as it can't be good for you where the liver is damaged.
I was diagnosed twenty two years ago and remain stable. I don't eat sugar or flour. I don't eat dairy or anything withnadfitives or preservatives. I don't eat salt or processed foods. I cook fresh everyday and avoid the Flammatory nightshades ! I did it original to lose weight as I am obese. But while I didn't lose weight the itch lessened and the symptoms are so much better. I have more energy. Everyone is different so you have to see what makes you tired or achy
Hi Bonnie,
Do you follow the AIP diet? Or take any supplements?
Thanks!
Kiki
I don't know what that is. I do it cause my homeopath suggested it and I feel better
No supplements. I take one shake for breakfast that has a lot of that stuff in it
