I recently read a post where someone said that sugar was just as bad on our liver as alcohol. Im not remembering who posted it but I have a awful sweet tooth from time to time & this worried me. So, I sent a message to my heptologist at the Indiana University Hospital asking about this. I'll post a pic of the reply I received back. It's apparently ok to have a little sweet snack from time to time. I hope this isn't offending the person who posted about sugar being as bad as alcohol. I apologize if so.

Sugar
That's fantastic. I'm struggling with giving up chocolate and have been having the odd bit here and there. I've definitely cut back a lot from the way I used to be. But I do crave chocolate cake!
Thank you!
Probably me honey. You can never offend me. I want you to be happy and well. I read sugar and carbs are bad like alcohol. I need a piece of chocolate cake with frosting so badly. I'm afraid to eat it.
You eat that chocolate cake dear. We still have a live to live, right? 😋
You should see my cake baking hobby shelves. I love making the little flowers and different designs. I have not made a cake or icing one since diagnosis. The dr are learning that we can have more and more of foods that years ago was taboo. I'm taking prednisone now and putting on to much weight. My face isn't mine anymore. If I had a piece of cake 🎂 I'm afraid I couldn't stop. Lol
Thank you for taking the time to ask and post, I was worried about sugar and I'am a chocoholic for sure and had it every day.
However I cut out all added sugar for over 8 weeks now. Afer realising that since I retired I'd gained so much weight, being at home made it easy to hit the biscuit tin. I have lost 12lb without any other effort so I will be keeping my chocolate for a special treat.
Thank you for asking 😊
Wow, I have been diagnosed for five years now and no one has ever told me that I should not eat sugar. Sugar is in everything! What do you all eat? Seriously, I am asking what do you eat?
I eat a little bit of everything lol. But I do keep the unhealthy stuff at a minimum. Dr Masuoka said as long as I keep my sodium intake under 2000mg daily & minimize my red meat that should be good enough. I love my garden, so lots of fresh fruits & veggies. I use a lot of Mrs Dash as well. Found out from someone on here that there are many different kinds of Mrs Dash so I rushed out & bought every seasoning of hers lol. Plus if you get on Pinterest there are tons of low sodium meals that you could feed the entire family & they would never know it's low sodium.
Ok good I was getting a little worried. That is what I do as well. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables but the fruit has so much sugar. I have an organic juice bar right next to my office so I do smoothies and juice most of the week. I drink nothing but water, some coffee in the morning and every now and then I drink a glass of organic green tea. My down fall is the salt. that has been harder for me to give up than the other stuff. I love the Mrs Dash idea. I will definitely incorporate that! I also have to tell you about my flush drink I drink first thing in the morning. I mix two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp of honey, juice from a 1/2 lemon to 8 oz of hot water. It is hard to drink so I use a straw lol. Since I have been doing this my bilirubin has dropped from 3.8 to under 1. I swear by it. It also keeps my gut healthy. Thanks for the reply, when I heard not to eat sugar I was in a panic.
I panicked a little myself over the sugar. Thanks for the flush drink, I'll need to try that. I also use a little Morton Lite Salt. It has 50% less sodium than regular table salt. I mainly use that for pasta when boiling the water. Oh yeah, I need my coffee in the morning or Im a bit of a bear haha.
Thank you!!!
maybe there is no evidence for normal people....but i do see a difference when i eat sugar as a matter of fact when i went off my healthy diet and began eating sugar laden foods each day-- is when the onset of my PBC symptoms began...i am unsure if we're born with PBC in our futures, or if it happens over time from bad nutrition and a sensitive immune system. But, for me it feels as though it adds gasoline to the fire, this is just my experience.
I have experienced personally that sugar has negative effects on my condition.
I am noticing especially fruit sugar.
