For all those wishing to boost their health through diet, it's easy to tell which foods are good for health, but which should be avoided which might increase itch etc. I have read on a posts that someone avoids chocolate for example, what wrong with that?

Best foods to boost immune system
I just continue to eat as I did pre-itch 2010 and diagnosis of PBC December 2010. I have done a bit of experimenting myself over the last almost 6yrs but I've not been successful in ridding myself of the itch.
Chocolate I don't think is to blame, it is probably the fat content that shudders people as it is high fat. Bile is required to break up fat so I suppose we need a bit more if we consume a high fat diet in PBC.
I've never been informed of anything not to eat since being diagnosed (I did ask pre-diagnosis and then just after) and I guess maybe because the consultant asked me briefly about my diet before he diagnosed.
Ah good, so I can carry on eating chocolate In general would you say then a low fat diet is best to help the liver? x
HI Katharine, I was diagnosed 13 years ago and have never been told to avoid anything food wise. Obviously its best to eat healthily anyway, which I do - well I try to!! I find if I eat a big meal I get pain in my gallblader/ gallstones, so do try to avoid.
I was told no alcohol and no artificial sweeteners asthey were like poison to your liver. I know I read not to eat liver.
The other day I read we cannot be any type of organ donor
I also wonder is there is any real scientific reason not to have chocolate with PBC, or the Itch. I have read of people who say it's bad for you or that they personally can't tolerate it and we are all different.
But I eat it all the time and don't seem to have any reaction but then ..... I don't suffer with the itch thankfully.
We all know that sugar is not good for us regardless of PBC, itching. so I always go along with the old saying a little of what you fancy does you good.
I think we have enough issues to deal with without restricting ourselves when we don't need to.
I was also told there are no restrictions on diet but a healthy one is best for all. Carrying too much extra weight can also lead to fatty liver. As little as 10% reduction in body weight can have health benefits for anyone who is overweight.
