Hi Cherry,

I like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains like oats and brown rice, and lean proteins. I avoid sugar, processed foods, fried foods, fatty foods, and foods with high sodium. Also, I try to drink water throughout the day.

A lot of people have said that avoiding gluten helps their liver. I also noticed that I feel worse after eating meat or dairy, so switching to tofu, beans, edamame, and almond milk has helped me. Everyone is a little different, so that might not be necessary.

Some of my favorite meals are oats with fruit and nuts, fresh green salad with lots of vegetables and edamame, baked sweet potatoes, fresh fruit makes a good snack, vegetable soups, lentils with brown rice, vegetable tofu stir fry with brown rice, beans and rice wrapped in a tortilla with diced tomatoes, etc.

I try to eat 5 - 6 small meals per day, so I am eating about every 3-4 hours. I feel like my liver can handle frequent small meals better than 3 larger meals per day.

I hope this gives you some ideas! :)

I asked regarding diet when I had my first hospital appointment back in 2010 just 2mths prior to diagnosis. The consultant just told me to continue eating as I had. He had asked me about diet, medications, smoking, etc prior and knew I'd never been a smoker, alcohol was never anything frequent in my life pre-2010 (I choose to abstain, did after first LFTs early 2010) and medications I rarely have, the last GP prescription was back in 1999 prior to being prescribed urso Dec 2010.

I've had time in the last 5yrs to do a bit of experimenting myself as I think early on in PBC diagnosis I am sure most of us wonder what we should have dietary-wise. I still continue to eat as I did before but I cut back further on any fats as in saturated fats, not that I had much pre-2010. My theory is that bile is required for breaking down fat so the more fat in the system the more bile we will need to produce and then have to deal with. I itch and it is thought to be used bile that is in the bloodstream that the system cannot deal with so it leaks out via the skin causing the itch (my theory is it reacts with all the nerve endings throughout the body).

Fat is important still though as it required for the absorption of those fat soluble vitamins like the D which we can be a bit deficient in.

I just eat quite normally to be truthful, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, if I cook veg I have a steam basket. I like jacket potatoes with a very tiny amount of butter. I have porridge either the one that you mix with milk (where I vary between putting in linseed mix or cocoa and don't add sugar) or traditional porridge oats made with half milk and half water and a splash of milk on top, often no sugar, occasionally a teaspoon of honey.

I do eat a lot of chicken and also fish. I am not that partial to red meat but I do have from time to time. I never bothered much with processed meats like ham and since PBC came along I don't really bother eating. I try to avoid certain chemicals that are in foods and for me a no no is artificial sweeteners. I'd rather use a bit of sugar as opposed to an artificial one.

I sometimes stew apple in a tiny amount of water or chop a raw one up as a snack in the evening, supposed to be good for things like dyspesia and it does work if you get heartburn.

The theory is with PBC it can be good to eat small portions little and often but I find myself though this can be good, I somehow find in my case I find myself feeling itchier. I put this down to the fact that when we eat the gallbladder releases bile to start breaking down food and the more we eat the more it will empty. Not sure if I am right there but it somehow seems to add up I think.

I tend to eat pretty big of a morning, not too less at lunchtime but by the evening meal I often find I don't want very much to eat and dont' do so. I don't tend to eat in the evening except the odd dry biscuits with a cup of tea or an apple. I seem to feel better for this as then I have many hours where my body is ending the food digestion and then having a good break.

In my view quality is better over quantity.

I think it can be trial and error and you yourself will find out over time how you feel with certain foods now.

Hi Cherry

Anything you like basically, you only live once. Everything in moderation. Enjoy all good things and don't let this mind blowing disease get you down. It's just about ruined my life with worrying about it and everything associated with it, not any more.

Do what ever makes you happy 😃

I asked my Gastro this question some years back and the reply was eat a sensible balanced diet there are no restrictions.

I follow the advice and eat a healthy plate, I never fry foods anymore and meats are lean cuts pleny of fruits and vegetables

I eat porridge and some cereals but I limit the amount of bread as I find it causes me to bloat so I prefer to have crackers. I eat dairy but in smaller amounts as I don't seem to tolerate them well so it's mainly yogurt which I seem okay with. I do eat desserts but not every day (weakness is chocolate)

Pulses, beans, lentil, rice are healthy options but I don't eat any of them I dislike the taste, the only time I may consume lentils is if it's in soup which I don't make myself so I don't have it often ,as the shop bought ones are loaded with salt. And salt is the only thing I did cut down on.

I eat what I want but certain foods bloat me badly so I avoid them as much as I can. I do try not to eat too much fatty things because I suffer the next day but having fish and chips now and then for a treat is worth the suffering. 😉

His there. I have found that my liver doesn't like eggs and my urine is darker when I drink a lot of milk. I think this is because they are harder to process. I have also gone gluten free now as well and have noticed a huge difference with less brain fog and tiredness. Good luck x
