Just picked up RX to start Urdo and was shocked at the # of pills for a one month supply, 270. 3 pills, 3 times a day, forever. I have PBC but no cirrhosis. Is this the normal RX?
New Urso RX: Just picked up RX to start Urdo... - PBC Foundation
New Urso RX
Hi there. It's different for everyone and is based on your weight. I am on 4 tablets a day totalling 1000mg. Possibly other factors involved too - I'm not sure - but definitely weight is the main one.
Hello Love4Liver.
Depends on your body weight as the previous poster has mentioned.
I am in the UK and it seems that there are slight variants between what mgs per body weight in kg we take. I was started back in Dec 2010 at diagnosis of PBC on 10mgs per kg body weight. I wasn't the 60kgs that the doctor rounded me off to, was less (I am just over 54kgs., lost a slight bit of weight after diagnosis but have been this weight now for around 4yrs) and I was taking 600mgs daily. I got 300mg tablets but 2 years ago the 300mgs were withdrawn and only 150mgs as a replacement so I take 4 of those a day.
I know that the guidelines seem to be from what I have read on PBC Foundation, between 13mgs and 15mgs per body weight kg. By my reckoning I am almost at the 13mgs per body weight kg daily.
I receive my urso in 90 days supply as I have always had to pay a charge towards the NHS prescriptions (and dentist, etc) so I asked my doctor to give me more than the 30 days that I was supposed to accept. I know when I switched GP surgery 3 years ago I ended up making an appointment to see the GP who would only write out 28 days supply of urso. He said when I rang surgery to take it up that that was all he could do on a repeat prescription. I wasn't happy so went in on an appointment that I didn't want to take up but decided I'd no choice. (I have always tried to be sensible regarding appointments at the GP surgery but find it never works in my favour so I don't bother anymore. I even tried synchronising the bloods at one of the 6 monthly checks with the annual medication review and seeing the GP but it didn't somehow work in my favour.) I got 3 x 28 days of the tablets but earlier this year when I saw the usual GP for the PBC I happen to mention that I was receiving the urso in split boxes due to having to take 84 days and daft when the tablets came in 30 day packaging if on 600mgs per day so she checked and agreed so I got 90 days reinstated that I got in the early days.
I am on 1,000 mg urso twice a day. I thought it was a lot also, but my lfts and alk phos. are both down to normal limits after 18 months on urso as well as the GGT. My biopsy showed the very beginnings of mild fibrosis before the urso was prescribed last May.
That does seem a lot whatdose is each tablet?i take 5 a day ...
I thimk its based on weight dont mean to.be rude but if you quite heavy this might b rigjt.check pbc website think dosage is on there.if not check wlith pharmacist if you dont want to bother doc

Hi, I put weight on with the Urso and take 7 tablets a day. Four in the morning and three at night. I dont care how much I am on because my nos have lowered. 😊
900mg per day. 300 after every meal. I'm the right BMI. Not over weight.
Hi, I take 3 x 250 mg urso capsules per day after food - two after breakfast and one in the evening after dinner. Doctor weighed me in order to calculate the dosage. My lfts considerably reduced so I think it must be correct.
I would check with the pharmacist if you are concerned about the dosage. They will know if it is ok. All the best
Interesting...I only have to take 1 pill a day. 300mg. I am normal weight. My numbers have gone back to better than normal. Figera crossed I can stay at this dosage.
Hi
I take 500mg twice daily and have done for years. Urso slows down the progress of PBC so needs to be given before (and It may not) Cirrhossis occurs. I have reached that stage but remain on the same dose.
I know its very costly. I take less per day now, and it has the same effect as when I took more. Medical Aid will not see it as a Cronic disease, therefor I have to pay for it, ridiculous
I have just started my medication and I am on 4 tabs a day . 250 mg. Dr weighed me and worked out dose recommended by consultant.
Hi Love4Liver, it sounds like you have a 90 day supply. I live in the US and my insurance will only pay for 90 supply. I take 250 mg three times a day, one with each meal, and have for over 2 years now. Check with the RX to confirm the number of days supply that you received. Good luck going forward!
My cost is 215 dollars and I'll be in the donut hole in may. I'm really concerned about the cost. I know it's much much cheaper in canada. Some company bout up all the distributors and just raised the price! The government have been holding hearing about that. It's really a financial burden but we have to take it to stay alive. I read on the post here that medicaid won't pay either. I'm on medicare. Medicaid said pbc is not a chronic disease.
Anyone out there have a suggestion?
