Hi, Lucy.

I am not sure if it comes down to being allowed.

As with any medication, a quick check with your consultant should be able to clear things up. Hopefully you will be able to have a quick chat before you attend the dentist appointment.

Thanks your your replies. Sadly Robert trying to get hold of my consultant is like trying to get to the moon . However I will try to ask her for any I might need in the future. Sadly the tooth must come out :-( it's a wisdom tooth with a curly root so I need to be referred to a surgeon :-(

Your consultant Lucylongstockungs, is he in the UK? If so you should have a telephone number for his secretary if you have received an letters from him.

I know I got a copy of his letter when he sent one to my GP back late 2010 to diagnose PBC and I noticed his secretary's details were on it. I rang her when I had Vitamin D blood done shortly after and I didn't understand the consultant's explanation on his letter he had sent to me, "A bit low but not too bad". She kindly posted me the actual results with the numbers for me to see (Vitmain D was ok looking by number).

Hello Lucylongstockungs.

I have only ever had an abcess once (about a decade ago) and I didn't have any antibiotics. I found mine came to a head itself several days later and cleared up of its own accord.

Dentists only prescribe certain medications that they can. My sister was said to have a heart murmur when she was expecting her 2nd child years ago and she informed her dentist and from them on any planned treatment she was given a prescription for amoxcillin to take prior to the visit. I did think it was a bit daft myself and one occasion she didn't take the course and was fine.

Probably the best way would be to contact your doctor and ask his advice if you come away from a dentist with a prescription. I have noticed more by reading patient info leaflets since PBC diagnosis that most state to be used in caution with a liver disorder but most medications out there are toxic to the system anyway but it's a case of they do aid in recovery and a lot do say 'the benefits outweigh the risks'.

I'm sure if you were very bad with the PBC you'd have been informed as apparently from what I have read, medications can be 'well tolerated' in earlier PBC.

I have read on this site previously other posters who have stated they are on or have taken courses of antibiotics for certain other health issues. One of those might fill you in more. I have to say I've not had any myself since 1999 when I had amoxcillin for a bad bout of tonsillitis. That of course led to thrush following the completion of the course.

I have had antibiotics on quite a few occasions simce diagnosis in 1999. Consultant said was fine.also I was told thatIalthough I make doggy ama antibiotics I do not make enough of the ones that protect the throat and all the waydown to bottom e.g mouth so I am more likelyto need a little push for my immune system in that area . Obviously everyone is different but an untreated abcess could be far more dangerous than a slight temporary rise in liver enzymes. Ring the docs as they will be able to give you a firm okay but this is my understanding of it.hop this helps. Cazer.

I was given antibiotics last year after an operation , the ENT consultant checked all medications with the Gastro I see, more recently my GP gave me some for a really bad ear and sinus infection, I think it's more to do with which antibiotic to take rather than not taking them.

You must also consider the risk of not taking them, Your GP could advise.

Thanks for your replies guys. I ll see my consultant in a few weeks so I'll ask then meanwhile no antibiotics but I need my wisdom tooth removed :-(

I had antibiotics about 2 months ago for a very bad chest infection, I can't remember what they were but i am allergic to penicillin so wasn't that one.

Interestingly when I was growing up my dad had odd courses of antibiotics and penicillin. He was in hospital a few years before he died late 1990s and I didn't know that the reason he was in was due to the fact he developed an allergy to penicillin.

I've not had any since 1999 and I wouldn't be able to say if I was allergic to penicillin as until then I wasn't aware that you could go on to become allergic.

I haven't just become allergic, I always have been, I have an emergency card and medical bracelet somewhere, I suppose i should use it but I doubt i would find it as I haven't seen it for years.

I think you can develop an allergy if you have too much of it in one go, like in hospital treatment if they have to keep pumping it in or did do at one time.

Hello again dollydaydreams.

You're probably right there regarding perhpas becoming allergic to something if you have too much. It seems only of late that antibiotics aren't being administered the same due to them not apparently working so well.

I know back in 1999 when I had a bad bout of tonsillitis and the GP said I needed medication, he asked if I was allergic to penicillin but I wondered how I would know? I was given amoxcillin. The only thing I got from taking after was thrush as some women in particular do.

Yes I can relate to that as well and got some stuff called nyastan ( or something spelt similar) to clear it up.

in reply to dollydaydreams

Yes they used to give you Nystatin think it was spelt (?) but when I had thrush back in 1999 Canesten was recommended and to buy 'over-the-counter'. It costs more OTC than it does on a prescription these days I noticed.

(I found Canesten irritated me more.)

What a dam nerve, they gave you the thrush with the antibiotics. I got a bottle of Nystatin late last year, am stashing it away now you said that :o).

Will mail you back in a few days as we are up to our eyeballs in it at the moment.

While over use of penicillin (or any other antibiotic) may eventually create an allergy to the drug it's not always the case.

Up until I was 27 I rarely had the need for penicillin (was a disgustingly healthy child/young adult) but I was prescribed penicillin for something (memory diminishes over time) and ended up in hospital from an allergic reaction to the medication. For some reason I had developed an allergy to penicillin around the age of 27.

I often wonder if this may have 'triggered' my PBC, or was the sudden development of a penicillin allergy due to the onset of PBC - bit of a "which came first, chicken or the egg" pondering - as my cousin was diagnosed with PBC the same year as I, I believe I was 'genetically' predisposed to developing PBC.
