You would have to ask the doctor why he decided not to prescribe the medication. It might be that he is waiting for you to see a specialist or something like that.

You can look on the PBC Foundation website for more information about PBC and treatment and there is a useful information leaflet that is specifically for doctors. You can sign up as a member (free) and you will get access to all the information - including the PBC Compendium which is like the encyclopaedia of PBC

Hello Dollyhenriquez17.

You didn't actually state if your liver function tests (LFTs) were normal or abnormal.

Have you had an AMA test done? Is that how you found out you had PBC?

The only reason I can think of why your doctor hasn't yet prescribed urso that is used in PBC could be due to at present you are asymptomatic and your LFTs are normal.

I think tho' as SC49 has stated, you would have to ask your doctor as to why you have been diagnosed with PBC yet haven't got ursodeoxycholic acid.

I got a biopsy done last month due to the malfunction of the liver enzymes and it came positive early PBC. I asked the dr if there is any treatment for it and his answer was no only diet. So I will see the endocrinologys in 2 week to follow up what is next.

I am not on medication yet and had four consecutive work ups for LFTS --- the first 3 were all elevated and dropped significantly each month after cleaning up my diet (less sugar and fats, more veggies, fruits and chicken/fish, less red meat and less alcohol). I also switched to a Gluten Free diet which the doctor believes made a world of difference. My AMA is elevated (84), but my ALP, bilirubin, etc. all remain okay. My ultrascran was clear but the biopsy in May revealed some damage (bile ducts missing) and AIH. Supposedly I am 'early stage' and since the LFTs have dropped into the normal stage, he won't start me on URSO or Prednizone.
