I am waiting to have my gallbladder removed as I have polyps, I have to admit I am scared. Can anyone tell me anything about how it is just before and after the operation.

I had my gallbladder removed in 1993 and it was done via quick laparoscopic surgery (in the U.S.). I was an outpatient, meaning I went several days before to sign paperwork and have my labs taken. The day of the surgery, I was told to report to the hospital by 11AM, was quickly wheeled to a room and asked to change into a gown, had surgery by 1:00 and then was taken to a recovery room. After I woke up and proved my system was in 'working order' (via urination), I was dressed, escorted to the car via wheelchair and sent home. I think I was back in my own bed by 7:30 and couldn't believe how quick the surgery was. In fact, my recent liver biopsy required a 6 hour stay --- two for signing paperwork and prep time, and four hours spent on my right side, followed by a quick meal.

Recovery after my gallbladder surgery was several days in bed and I was back on my feet in no time. Hopefully you'll also be having laparoscopic surgery and be well quickly. My thoughts are with you, Donkey!

Hello Donkey,

I know several ladies who have had gallbladders removed. Though I never asked, one did go into a bit of detail.

She had hers done keyhole here in England on the NHS so no major openings. Think there is 2 incisions, sure via and near the tummy button, one is for the camera, the other for the surgical tools.

Apart from a couple days discomfort after the procedure with keyhole means that most people here in England only tend to be in overnight in hospital as not sure if 'we' do like JennerLayne's experience go home same day.

I know gallbladder removal via keyhole is now considered pretty straight-forward a procedure and due to no major stitching afterwards recovery pretty rapidly.

Good Luck.

I probably should have added that there were five small incisions placed within my abdominal area. The GB was removed through my naval, and the other cuts provided room for scopes and lighting to see what was being cut, along with a probe that was inserted to push air into the abdomen (it inflated my belly like a balloon so they could have clear access). Each incision was closed via small staples and removed a week later, although I understand now, that many surgeons opt for a glue-like substance or stitches that dissolve on their own.

Thankyou Ladies.
