Hi Cazz22

I started Urso just 3 months ago. I was advised 250mg 3xday, with food, I.e. breakfast, lunch and evening meal, and was advised the main symptom to expect was diarrhoea (sorry to anyone eating their breakfast!). I set an notification/ alarm on my phone to remind me as wasn't used to taking medicine.

I have tolerated it very well and have had NO side effects whatsoever. 10 days ago I attended my review with my consultant, and found that my Alk. Phos had halved. My consultant said that if I wished I could now try 2 with breakfast and evening meal, but to watch out for same symptom again. I'm pleased to say that I'm still tolerating it well.

Good luck and fingers crossed you have no problems with it too. x

I take 3 x 250mg after breakfast with my consultant`s agreement. If I had to remember 3 times to take them I`m sure I would remember next day that I had missed a dose!! I don`t have any side effects and have been taking 3 for a few years and 2 before that but always in the same way. Perhaps you could try different times and see what works best for you.

I was started on 600mgs per day back in Dec 2010 after diagnose PBC.

The GP was going to prescribe them to me in 150mg tablets at 4 per day until I said no way was I taking 4 per day. I had read a bit up on PBC prior to seeing him as I had had the AMA blood test 2mths prior and I got the drug info from the receptionist who rang me asking me to go in and see the GP as he wanted to issue me with some meds. I had read about varying doses of urso.

He gave me the script for 2 x 300mgs per day. I saw on the pharmacy label said to take one twice per day.

I started out on one at morning, one later at night (around 9p.m). I had a few initial side-effects but it only prompted me to continue taking the urso after about 6wks when I had the first repeat blood with urso. That looked good so I pressed on. I altered the night time tablet to with the evening meal as found that better with more food.

I have done my own bit of experimenting with the urso over the last yr and did read on this site sometime last yr you can take them all at once so I took my 2 together with breakfast. Well have to say for the few days I took it I started to itch later morning which was unusual for me as I'm normally just a night time itcher. So I went back to the breakfast and just before even meal routine. I did start to take amilk thistle daily with lunch Dec last yr and so far have had good blood results, even better that is since.

Can't say I have any side-effects these days from them at all like I did originally - heartburn and a bit of bloating. Last Sept I reached for the tablets as I thought I was having the side-effects again but noticed the brand name on the pack had gone so did a bit of checking. The side-effects once again just vanished and perfectly fine there again.

I take 2 tabs 3 times a day, before breakfast, lunch and dinner time. I had read on the leaflet which accompanied the tablets and had also been told that after a period of time (sorry I do not recall how long) that it was possible to take them all at once. Around 6 months ago I decided that I would take them all at night time as I kept on forgetting to take them. At first I had no problems but after 2-3 months began having really bad stomach pains, bloating and diarrhoea - I would have uncontrollable diarrhoea 3-4 times a day - so much so that I became too nervous to leave the house. I had a really embarrassing incident when I soiled myself in work and ever since then I carry spare underwear with me at all times. Initially I thought it was to do with eating porridge every day or bread so stopped eating it. It did help a little but after a couple of months more I realised that it was possibly the URSO so went back to taking it 3 times a day and lo and behold the diarrhoea abated. I still get it a few times a week but nothing like it used to be. Sorry for being so graphic!!

When I was pregnant I used to suffer with really bad constipation with having to take iron supplements so I know what your going through. I was prescribed Lactalose at that time which used to work for me however that was before being diagnosed with PBC so you would have to check with the Dr if it is safe to use. Something more natural is either pear, prune or orange juice diluted with a little hot water, this used to work a treat for my father who had parkinsons disease. You could also try a hot water bottle at the bottom of your back or on your stomach to ease the pain of the bloating. Hope you find something soon that works for you. Good luck.
