Hello, I've had the gastroscopy results - the biopsies show that I have gastritis.
H. pylori negative.
This is following long term iron deficiency, B12 deficiency (low for at least 10 years and deficient a year ago).
Would having a diagnosis of gastritis rule out autoimmune gastritis? I'm assuming the biopsy results would have indicated an autoimmune gastritis, have I got that right?
Just wondering how to go about following this up with my GP.
Many thanks

You might find the following an interesting read which might help with your follow up with the Gp.........
Gastritis and Intrinsic Factor:
Chronic atrophic gastritis, a type of gastritis that involves inflammation and thinning of the stomach lining, can damage the parietal cells in the stomach. These parietal cells are responsible for producing intrinsic factor, a protein that is crucial for the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine.
Reduced Acid Production:
Gastritis can also lead to a decrease in the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid is necessary for the release of vitamin B12 from food, and without sufficient acid, the body struggles to absorb the vitamin.
Consequences of Deficiency:
A vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to various health problems, including anemia (pernicious anemia), nerve damage, and neurological issues.
Autoimmune Gastritis:
In some cases, autoimmune gastritis, where the body's immune system attacks the stomach lining, can be a major cause of vitamin B12 deficiency.
Other Factors:
In addition to gastritis, other factors like dietary deficiencies, certain medications, and intestinal problems can also contribute to B12 deficiency.
I just got a letter saying “gastritis demonstrated” but no other information. I wondered if I might get that info by contacting the hospital to see if there is a more full report available.
