Advice needed? Too much b12? Liver damage? Please super anxious..

2023 I experienced symptoms of b12 deficiency - doctor abroad suggested it’s b12, took b12 tablets (a lot of neurological symptoms)

Had blood tests after supplementing which showed liver is fine and b12 was in the 800s

Then got 5 b12 injections from a salon ranging over 2 months ( Hydroxocobalamin - 1000mcg) I ordered ampoules online but didn’t take them as by then I was feeling better anyway

Then continued with supplements (on the odd day when I’d remember)

January saw a neurologist who said I might have ms or tumour so scheduled an MRI this scared me so I decided to take the ampoules

I took 2 in one week and then 1 more a week later and then decided, I’ll just wait for results and see what’s going on before taking anything - sometimes I would take a 5000mch lozenges

feb had a private test - which showed I had thick blood? (Normally caused by liver disease but my lfts were fine so I wasn’t worried)

Then March developed severe symptoms - indigestion burping bloating extreme fatigue hairloss

Blood tests showed everything okay liver wise but I had high b12 and I said it was probably due to the January supplements

I also got some liver spots, red petechia,

then symptoms worsened I developed dark urine, red blotchy palms, rectal bleeding which I ignored due to anxiety

Then finally googled which suggested liver disease

Private tests show raised ALp, bile acid and bilirubin (which is the cause of dark urine)

So went to my gp who did tests for lft, autoimmune hepatitis and said everything is normal, I asked for ultrasound which was normal..

but I am certain because of my raised b12, dark urine, floating and bloody stools, breaking teeth, raised alp bile acids bilirubin and thickened blood My liver has been damaged. Although I stayed away from supplementing for an entire year my symptoms haven’t improved which it would if I hadn’t developed chronic liver disease.

Not here to scare anyone as I do believe everyone who hasn’t had issues is normal and I know nice guidelines suggests eod injecting, which is why I felt comfortable getting injections as my frequency was never very high anyway,

Am I an anomaly, I am so stressed and overwhelmed

not sure what I can do to help the liver if I have harmed.

Some of you may suggest that something else has caused the liver damage..

but I don’t drink, not on any medication, not on birth control, don’t have fatty liver, don’t have hepatitis or autoimmune hepatitis, not high iron levels,

So all the reasons that would generally harm your liver aren’t applicable to me.

Pernicious anaemia and gallbladder issues commonly occur. I have both, hopefully recently being diagnosed with PA, that my gallbladder issues will resolve themselves. another related symptom with gallbladder issues can be pain in your right shoulder and pale stools. This may be the issue.

I typed in "raised ALp, bile acid and bilirubin gallbladder" into google and first thing that came up was a whole lot of gallbladder references.

Don't panic, take a look yourself, good luck

Thanks for your response, ultrasound for gallbladder was okay not sure how to resolve what’s going on.

Stools are normal and no itching so I’m lost

I would look at each symptom individually, dark urine can be gallbladder & pa. Patchy palms, not sure. The bloody stools should be a worry, could be something as harmless as an ulcer in your stomach or something sinister. When I was admitted to hospital in September last year when first diagnosed they worded my symptoms as "Deranged Liver Function tests" (as below), but my liver ultrasound was fine.

Have you been tested for vitamin d deficiency or taken any supplementation? If you are deficient as many people with PA are, this can raise ALP and cause blood thickening and hair loss. Go to your doctor get tested for vitamin d and be careful with supplementing with this vitamin because taking too much can cause many problems. Don't take too much and get regular monitoring to get your levels right. If you have autoimmune gastritis, this can be part of pernicious anaemia and cause gut problems. I also have had breaking teeth through teeth grinding/anxiety from PA.

I can see you are quite stressed, understandably. It sounds like you are getting worse because of staying away from supplementing B12, rather than overdosing. Good luck.

Total Bilirubin umol/L (<20) 92H

GGT U/L (5-35) 12

Alk.Phos. U/L (30-110) 51

ALT U/L (10-35) 52H

AST U/L (10-35) 197H

The bloody stool was checked no cause was found, as no hemorrhoids or polyps,

Patchy palms are related to liver issues,

My b12 has always been in range hence why I’ve never considered having Pa, but I was aware that you can have normal b12 but a deficiency which causes symptoms, that’s why I got injections,

Liver damage is a worry as I’ve developed blood thickness

Hoping this is all caused by something trivial like gallbladder and not liver damage caused by supplementation.

I am vitamin d deficient so I will try work on that and see if that helps,

Thanks for sharing your experience

Please note that high B12 is a potential symptom of liver damage as a damaged liver will dump its stores of B12. High B12 is not a cause of liver damage.
