Hi I have difficulty taking iron tablets even very low dose like spatone. I am not vegetarian and eat meat fish and varied diet apart from high fibre such as lentils which cause problems with my IBS. I’ve see people recommend heme iron but I’m not sure what that is and why it may be better and can anybody recommend a brand

Thank you

My mum has IBS and tolerates floradix. Best taken away from food with vit c every other day I've read.

It's a matter of finding what works for you .

I've heard of elemental iron needed .

I also am not sure what I meant by haem iron.

Haem I expect just an abbreviation for haemoglobin????

I believe heme iron is natural iron, from organ meat. So spleen and liver from cows etc in capsule form.

I really want it to be haem as well, since that’s how we spell haematology etc here. And it makes sense. Not sure why it’s heme.

Heme is the American word for haem.

I take haem/heme/elemental iron (processed from bovine spleen). I buy on-line from Three Arrows in USA. Suggest building up from 1 to 2 to 3 capsules over several months and then finding your maintenance dose. As I can't absorb iron from food I will probably take maintenance for the foreseeable. At the moment I'm researching with the support of a private haematologist and NHS blood tests every six months. The effect has been life-changing.
