anyone help?

Hi,

wondered whether anybody could help. I had bloods taken, second week of an upper respiratory virus.

Results showed high B12 - 994 ng/l. Reference range was 127-771ng/l. ( this upper range looks low compared to many I’ve seen online?). Folate was 10.6 ug/l.

I take B complex vitamins daily and have for years. I stopped taking them 2 weeks before the test as I had some crawling feelings on my skin. This had happened few years ago and I stopped taking my vitamin then and it seemed to resolve. So I stopped them again.

My GP has marked the result as satisfactory. After googling I am panicking! It seems it could indicate all kinds of awful illnesses.

Is 2 weeks long enough to show an unasked result off supplements. And could bring unwell alter result?

Thanks.

Sounds like you are absorbing the b vitamins well!

They csn stay in your system months.

High b12 levels that are high without taking ANY supplements can indicate something else going on as I understand it.

Methylcobalabin can cause problems/side effects in some too.

Thanks for replying. The supplements were oral, I had been taking them for years. I did stop about 14 days before the blood test though. Wonder if the supplements could still affect the test?

Yes. I realised you are taking oral b12

Taking oral B12 will skew your results. In some cases you would need to be off supplements for months so in my opinion not worth the risk of experiencing symptoms.

Scientist, not medic.

In the words of Lance Corporal Joe Jones of Dads Army, 'Don't Panic!'

The upper limit quoted by different sources is irrelevant. In your case I suspect that the '994' is simply the upper limit of detectability using the kit and technology. If I was a bit more up to date I could probably guess which manufacturer they were using.

Go with your GP. 'Satisfactory'. Don't go Googling 'raised B12' and being led down rabbit-holes when the cause of your levels is simply coming out of a blister-pack or bottle!

Merry Christmas.
