Very interesting - especially as it discusses absorption...

To maximize vitamin B12 absorption, its intake should be spread throughout the day

I'll nick this and post on Thyroid UK as well! (Already did that with your previous post. :-) )

You nick what you like.

I havn't been on Thyroid UK for a while but it was there that I first started out. I found Grey Goose very informative.

"To maximize vitamin B12 absorption, its intake should be spread throughout the day"

True but only relevant to the intrinsic factor absorption mechanism, which is not functional in PA (but could be useful for the thyroid group for sure).

Interesting to find out how timing and dosing affect any passive diffusion in those with PA (or other absorption issues).

Could it be that a single dose of B12 doesn't result in enough absorption to make much difference. But multiple doses through the day do deliver a meaningful quantity?

Obviously, the lack of effective entero-hepatic recirculation will still be a major factor!

Unsure but it seems a possibility worth investigating.

Thank you Jillymo . An interesting article . In discussing reasons for B12 deficiency, Gastritis is mentioned , but not Autoimmune Gastritis alias Pernicious Anaemia.

Maybe the mention of gastritis covers all, who knows ? I would have thought anyform of gastritis is caused by inflammation and would impair absorbtion. πŸ€”

I have errosive gastritis and crohns. If I ever get the pending capsule swallow I will post the results. It has been a ruddy long journey to get some answer's as to what is taking place. At a guess I would assume mine is autoimmune !

Thanks, Jillymo. Will take my time with this one. At a quick glance it looks complex but worth the effort to read and absorb properly.

[ Think this is where my absorption problems are most evident !]

I have had the same issue since my school days of not being able to take anything in. It's no good me reading a book because if I put it down I forget what I have read and have to start over again. πŸ€”

I'm glad it's not just me who has this problem. πŸ˜…

Thank you for sharing this information. I didn't realize that B12 is excreted through bile. This is interesting to me because, it is my understanding that the gallbladder regulates the flow of bile into the stomach. When your gallbladder is removed that allows large amounts of bile to be dumped into your intestines, willy, nilly, with no regulation. I have felt that my B12 issues started after my gall bladder was removed.

Yes, up to 5 mcg can be excreted in bile. Normally, most of this is recovered by intrinsic factor but this does not happen in individuals with PA who lack functional intrinsic factor. This is sometimes referred to as the enterohepatic recirculation of B12.
