Doubling Dose For Hypothyroidism?

Hi, I know this is not the thyroid thread. I’m here because I’m B12 deficient, SI with hydroxocobalamim. But because it’s an autoimmune problem I sure a number of others are affected by hypothyroidism hence my desire to get thoughts and opinions (I’ll make the decision 🙂) on doubling my thyroxine dose by take two tablets per day.. I’m on 50mg, been at that for years, but I still feel cold especially feet and hands. My TSH level is 3.2 and I understand it should be more around 1. I intend asking my GP in March (will be discussing B12 provision with him then after new NICE guidelines are published) but I’d like to try it sooner if feesible. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you forum for your help so far, re my B12 deficiency, I wouldn’t be enjoying a more normal life now if it wasn’t for your willingness to share. ❤️

I suggest you'd be better off asking over on the Thyroid UK forum. :-)

My view is that you would be ill-advised to go straight to 100 micrograms (mcg). Maybe a short time on 62.5, 75, 87.5 and see how each adjustment goes.

And do you have sufficient tablets to make changes without running out?

hello B12 again, , difficult one as dose varies for individual and weight is one factor, etc. gps work on averages, but we are all individual.

From my experience only, (when overweight) anything much over 3.2 I would feel unwell and dose needed to be increased . At lower weight the dose was reduced because lower reading.. I have been struggling at lower dose. My previous gp said 2 to 2.2 was optimal for tsh. I have never been stable though.

I have had had thyroid decreased/increased by 0.25 each time. .

I think helvella is right, the thyroid forum is the right place with more advice and current information .

I would not be doubling that dose without getting your doctor's advice first. 3.2 sounds fine. Doubling your dose could bring on serious heart symptoms.

I also have hypothyroidism and keep my level at about 1.3, changes in medication level should be tiny. Please do NOT double your dose, my mother’s gp doubled her dose after a blood test. It turned out to be someone else’s results from the lab! My mother became very unwell as it was 12 mths befor the mistake was realised and it caused heart failure and she died 4 yrs later. See your gp first, please take care.
