Hi, does anyone know if there are 2 types of Metaplasia. I have read somewhere can't remember where that there are. One is complete the 2nd incomplete and it said the findings at Gastroscopy should be recorded. I asked the Gastro consultant and he was not aware of it.

Hi Helliborous,

First and foremost, I think it is important that people understand what Metaplasia is. Lots of people have brain fog and even as a Midwife, to parents I used ‘plain language’.

So, Metaplasia is the change or transformation of a cell type to a different cell type.

Your Gastroenterologist does not work in a laboratory. They work with Patients. Someone who constantly looks down a microscope all day has superior knowledge in Histology. Histology is the microscopic anatomical inspection of biological tissues.

There can be different types of Metaplasia but the Gastrointestinal tract is 25 foot long. For example Oesophageal Metaplasia, Intestinal Metaplasia. Does each have a type and are graded ? Yes most probably but this a Specialist’s area.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for your reply Narwhal10, I have recently been diagnosed with Multifocal Metaplasia so am curious and somewhat anxious to find out as much as possible. I have seen research papers regarding 2 types one type is complete and the second incomplete, the second showing to be more aggressive. When I asked the consultant Gastro he wasn't aware of the two types which worried me as it stated in the paper that the type should be recorded. He was also bemused when I told him that I was drinking lime juice before a meal to help with digestion. Apart from advising me to take Vits A C and E and of course the surveillance he did not offer any more guidance. So right now I am questioning my choice of Consultant gastro. You're right he doesn't work in a lab but I would have thought that it would be something he would have some knowledge of. Best Wishes

I am sorry to learn of your diagnosis and yes, of course it must be a worrying time.

You can apply for the copy of the report under the Freedom of Information Act (2000) and standard Information Commissioner’s Office letter. The Pathology/Histology laboratory may have marked it on. I am unsure.

No, he is a gastroenterologist so would not know about lime juice that is a Dietician’s remit. People do get confused as to what we can and cannot actually do. We have Governing Bodies and if we work beyond our Role and Scope, we can be hauled up to a Tribunal for Disciplinary Action. Clinicians generally have further qualifications but we choose what interests us. I am sure if you Googled him, you can read the Research Papers that he has written. Then you will see where his interests are.

Gastroenterology is a huge branch of medicine. You have upper and lower ones. Liver Transplant specialists. Again it is complex.

😘
