To increase or not

my main current symptom of B12 deficiency is incontinence of urine. I inject myself and the problem gets worse for 24 hours, leading to puddles on the floor, then it settles down for about 4 days then the incontinence starts again and I inject. I inject about twice a week.

I have noticed that when I have had blood taken and tested my B12 despite my self treatment is either low in range or middle of range rather than off the scale as you would expect. I wonder if my body does not hold onto it very well, if I am peeing it all out in these puddles on the floor.

I find the injections very painful so not keen to increase but wonder if I should. I would like to be able to manage this better.

Hello, I do not know the answer, but blood test levels indicate to me that you are not injecting frequently enough. I do not know if there are other reasons for this.

Increasing injections on a trial basis should improve bloods and incontinence.

Personally I had worsening incontinence problems when B12d before treatment. . Also had excessive urination after each loading dose. Decided to inject every day and this then improved.

I wonder why injections are so painful, are you subcutaneous or intramuscular; needle size, guage and angle; location needed. Ask for this information to try and solve this. Best wishes.

i inject subcut with an insulin syringe tiny needles and very sharp into my legs. My tummy is very sensitive so have avoided so far. It is the B12 liquid going in that hurts with a stinging nerve pain. I tried pascoes B12 that didnt hurt but it didnt relieve any symptoms either. Perhaps I will try and brave daily for a while and see what happens.

I use pascoe and I find the liquid can sting going in. I then stop and restart very slowly. I find that works, hope doing this helps you!

I sympathise with you - I dislike injecting. Deep breaths and 'relaxing' did not help, so now I say to myself 'just get on with it, do it'. It helps.

I hope you will find your way to deal with it 🙂.

Do you have someone who could do injections into your arm? My husband does mine. Usually it does not hurt but occasionally it hurts a tiny bit for a second.

I've switched from tummy to love handles and it's much less painful

Hi Hectorsmum

This is so difficult a symptom as it must cause a lot of anxiety. If it was me I would inject every day and if that works … celebrate. Then if you wish try to do every other day.

If every day does not work then try twice a day. If that doesn’t work then we can have a rethink.

hello, just remembered another forum member said they used ice (pack) before injecting. This should help deaden sensation. x

Make sure you do not have a bladder infection (get a test of your urine). If not, try working with a physiotherapist with your pelvic floor muscles. Incontinence is not that uncommon in older women, and especially for women who have had a baby. Strengthening your pelvic floor can help. If you are only leaking a little, try some overnight menstrual pads. If you are leaking a lot, the adult "diapers" are much improved these days and can prevent the leaks on the floor. I hope you work things out! Very best wishes.

Thanks Hockey player. I am sure it is not an infections it has been going on for too long 20 years or more. Diagosed with irritable bladder. Thank fully it only happens indoors, usually at night. I have laminate flooring so easy to clean up with a towel and disinfectant floor wipes. I have been trying to avoid the diapers for environmental reasons but will have a google today to see if any washables available yet. I am a Muslim which inadvertently leads to a lot of pelvic floor exercise.

I am not sure how Muslim practices help. I was thinking about Kegel exercises. medlineplus.gov/ency/patien...

Interesting. How?

You say five lots of prayer a day and have to keep yourselves ritually clean for the prayers which involves not passing wind. If you pass wind you have to go and do a ritual wash before your next prayers so you tend to spend a lot of the day holding in your farts with pelvic floor.

Right, yes, that would definitely keep your pelvic floor in good shape!

Are you taking a B complex (with no more than 10mg of B6) to balance out the B vitamins? I thought any slight wee issues I had came from no longer having a youthful or pre-pregnancy pelvic floor, but I have noticed an improvement and I think some of it is from the other B vitamins.

I was advised to only take B6 for 4 months and then have 2 months off so I bought a B complex without B6 and add it separately. The B complex I take comes from a company called Pelvic Relief - pelvicrelief.co.uk/products...

Thank you. I will order some. I have been taking folate but not a B complex, just relying on marmite.

I suggest you check your folate level. I have found high B12 causes me problems like yours unless I keep my folate levels up.

medichecks are doing my blood including folate. I should get results next week.

Hi, I am surprised no one has suggested HRT .It definitely assists with incontinence.

I agree to all of the above advise, but here is one that might help. I got these for my granddaughter

heygirls.co.uk/shop/reusabl...

for her periods, then decided they were great for urinary incontinence. Couldn't have been without them, but since I am taking B12 EOD my urinary incontinence has totally resolved and I haven't leaked a drop. Wishing you an equally good outcome.

I hope it is ok to send this link, I do not own the company or shares in it or anything, but if not allowed, will one of administrators the please remove it? Thank you
