Weird info re fruit

What on earth is this about and how is it out there looking so plausible to anyone new to B12 deficiency? 😱

Yikes. Insane and dangerous nonsense.

Fruit does not contain B12 naturally and although it is theoretically possible, I've never heard of or seen B12-fortified fruit.

The internet is full of nonsense, I was amazed that this article claims to also have been reviewed by a doctor.

Exactly, plausible if you didn’t know differently 😱

Was yours published? I tried to post a correction to this nonsense, and nothing has appeared yet.

No , it wasn’t . I expect that they vet everything , and only comments that they agree with are published. I wasn’t rude at all . Just said that it was totally inaccurate.

I replied to someone who wrote a thank you to “ Redcliffelabs” in India ,a vegan who was so pleased to read the article . Saving that it was inaccurate and that there is no B12 in any fruits . Just looked again and it has disappeared .

Hmm... Their email is listed at the bottom of the page. I might email them, though actually I wonder if the PA Society might be interested in sending them a polite hint. I might try them first.

Same here nothing published. Dishonest as well as stupid ☹️

It’s really shocking . The information that b12 can be found in fruits is dangerous . Can cause real harm .

I replied to one of the comments and also commented myself. Surprise, surprise, our comments aren’t there. Only comments agreeing or praising the information allowed obviously 🙄

I’ve sent an email to the Redcliffe Labs , ( in India ) telling them that the article is dangerous. Doubt whether they will do anything about it . Really irresponsible to put it mildly . They need reporting to some official department in India . .

Wow, that's incredibly misleading. I've sent them an email as doubt very much the comments will appear. I'm shocked, but then given the geographical location that shock turns to indifference. A doctor authorised that article too.

Goodness. While all of these fruits so good for you and will provide nutrients and digestion properties, the claims ag providing b12 dangerous.

The title ridiculous and very misleading.

Some of the replies then go on to say have diary ,meat if low in B12!!!

Surely shouid say supplement if you choose not to eat rich sources of

B12

Or can't absorb enough B12 from whatever you eat.

Then add your healthy fruits ..

Basic nutrition needs to be taught from the very young.

Critical thinking seems low - if a mainly vegetarian nation is eating these B12 rich fruits (and there was a link to b12 rich vegetables as well) then why do they have B12 issues??

Rolloliveson profile image
Rolloliveson

The geographical location shouldn't make that much difference. Sophisticated medicine is freely available in lndia - if you have the money. Dr Chandy, who taught the medical establishment here a thing or two in the sixties, wrote the book 'Vitamin B12, efficiency in clinical practice' based on long experience of the disease, first in India and then when he came to practise as a GP here in Britain. I have friends of Indian heritage, living here for three generations, who travel back to India for treatment since the NHS has become such a shambles. What is concerning is that this will be read by those who don't have the funds to access the varied diet we are lucky to enjoy, or treatment when things go wrong.

I've written too. I think fellow feeling for those who endure the misery of PA/B12d shouldn't be constrained by geography.

It just goes to show that you can't rely on anything on the internet!

Any site with misleading rubbish like this, whilst it's also trying to sell the reader something, is shocking. [But not surprising.]

Supplementing fruit with B12? Why? Why not simply take tablets?

Grrrr!

Bring back books !

Self promotion and advertising, posing as research documentation is way too common on on-line videos and publications. Trawling through endless rubbish to find an occasional useful find is like reading every book in the library.

A waste of B12.

Not to mention how dangerous "advice" can be, when it becomes highly profitable . Who better to target than the desperate ?

A quick read of this article told me all I need to know. As I see it, they never actually claimed any particular fruit contains B12, but aids in absorption of B12, which may or may not be true. I have some postings on a Quora forum about eating fruits for the B12 benefits. All hogwash to me.

Showgem profile image
Showgem in reply toscnuke

Did we read the same article?

It names 10 fruits which they claim are good sources of b12!

You are correct in saying it’s hogwash 👍

Technoid profile image
Technoid in reply toShowgem

It's got a lot of confusing information. As scnuke says, most of the sections on specific fruits hint at the fact there is actually no B12 in the fruit and rather that other vitamins in the fruit will "help to absorb B12" or complement B12. Curiously they make an exception for apples stating clearly: "Vitamin B12 in apples can boost the immune system and enhance metabolism" which, of course, is absolute tosh.

But the article title and paragraph headings do imply that B12 can be found in fruit, and they repeatedly use the completely nonsensical phrase "Vitamin B12-rich fruits". There is, of course, no such thing as Vitamin B12-rich fruits. There may be some B12 in very obscure fruits that are not available on the market but this an irrelevant technicality. No fruit that is readily available for sale contains significant amounts of human-usable B12. If they did, us vegans would not have to bother with fortification or supplementing....

The bad news is... this isn't the only insane article like this... heres another

Here's an interesting one, study on cyanocobalamin-enriched tomatoes. Shows its possible in theory at least. They've also done this experimentally with peas.

I’ve read articles on b12 in things like seaweed, but some think that it’s probably not actually the seaweed but bacteria etc. The same with vegetables, my homegrown ones probably have a little more dirt etc than the more clinically grown and sprayed vegetables that are often in the supermarkets.

They say a little bit of dirt is good for your immune system, but I’ve still got immune conditions.

Technoid profile image
Technoid in reply toShowgem

Seaweed contains mostly B12 analogs (so non-human viable B12) but Duckweed and Chlorella can contain viable B12. I've never seen duckweed for sale but Chlorella is more available these days. Not to be relied by vegans instead of B12 supplements since not tested enough for adequacy of B12 content. But interesting.

anything edible is useless if you have a B12 absorption issue such as Pernicious Anemia, failure to address P.A. will lead to death.
