NICE guidelines

Just had someone at my surgery call to say I haven’t had b12 for years (needless to say untrue) and so cannot receive my usual injection. I have explained that you don’t test B12 while receiving B12 and that the guidelines should be read. I mentioned that the new guidelines are due and should be read anyway. Does anyone know the planned release dates and if the draft review went through?

Thank you. Do you happen to know if it’s possible to request doctors to read, understand and consider them now? Do I have to delay my appointments until the new guidelines are released?

Hi RoseFlowerDew,

It is much easier than that. Please tell me when you did have your last B12 injection at your G.P. surgery .

There is a record on the computer system of that. The person giving you the injection would have typed into the computer that they gave it to you. Then given you the next date using the GP’s computer diary.

So, ask them, ‘Has your software been updated recently ?’

It needs one.

😉

Hi,

A few useful links for people reading this thread. Some might be worth passing to GP surgery.

Check any recent prescription receipts you have. Should list that B12 has been prescribed recently. Might also be worth talking to local pharmacist where you pick up prescriptions. They should have a list of all medications you are on.

Have you got a copy of the local B12 deficiency guidelines your ICB (Integrated Care Board) in England or Health Board in Wales/Scotland are using.

If you can't find them online or by searching forum posts here then best bet is to submit a FOI (Freedom of Information) request to ICB/Health Board asking which B12 deficiency guidelines are used locally and for a link to or copy of them.

These local guidelines can differ from NICE guidelines. See blog post below.

If you have time, you might want to check if your GP surgery or your ICB/Health Board is currently reviewing people on B12 injections.

Your ICB/Health Board may have a Medicines Optimisation team looking for ways to save money.
