Teva has hydroxocobalamin 1,000 mcg/mL solution for intramuscular injection in 30 mL vials on back order and the company estimates a release date of mid-November 2023.

It is normally available with an Rx at most retail pharmacies, but right now there is a shortage from the one major manufacturer. Supply is expected to resume in Nov or Dec. Until then, you can order 1mg/ml ampules from apohealth.de. Limit of 9 packages of 10 ampules. I received mine quickly and without issue. I am sure any of the other suppliers that wedgewood mentioned would also be fine.

To get a hydroxycobalamin prescription in the US, is there a specific way to get that? I have only been able to get cyanocobalamin. Would you trust an expired cyanocobalamin vial that’s a couple of months past date?

An unopened vial of cyano should be fine for a few months beyond printed expiration date. I get my Rx from either my Hematologist or Primary Care physicians. They do not give me any trouble about it and they accept that I have improved dramatically over the last couple of years. Right now I am using both cyano that I get from my mail order pharmacy from my insurance company free of charge and hydroxo from one of the German pharmacies. Hopefully the hydroxo shortage will be over soon. I am told now it will be some time in Feb 2024. I have not done poorly using both formulations, but would prefer to use all hydroxo. I use cyano in the morning and hydroxo in the early evening. But I suppose it would not make a difference.

It is my understanding that hydroxocobalamin is produced by 2 main manufacturers in the US and there is a shortage in supply till late November or early December. My prescription is on hold till supply comes in. I am part of a support group and a large number of people in the US are on hold right now. All must be by prescription in the US. If you need more supply for self treatment you will have to source it from Germany or the UK. Best of luck to you!
