The Role of Neurotropic B Vitamins in Nerve Regeneration

Interesting paper. Highlights B1, B6 and B12.

Summary and Conclusion:

"All of the three highlighted B vitamins may create the necessary environmental conditions for successful nerve regeneration, each of which via individual modes of action (concluded in Figure 1). Vitamin B1 essentially facilitates the energy production needed for the process and acts as a site-directed antioxidant, while vitamin B6 is vital for neurotransmitter synthesis and for inhibiting the release of neurotoxic glutamate [29, 32, 40]. Vitamin B12, on the other hand, largely promotes nerve cell survival and is strongly and directly involved in remyelination and the maintenance of myelin sheaths [41, 42, 46, 47, 56]. However, to elucidate molecular mechanisms, prove nerve-regenerating functions, and investigate neuroprotection, further experimental in vitro and in vivo studies with the individual B vitamins and the combination are needed.

B9 ( folate) was always said to be important to take with B12 .as they work together .

Thanks Technoid,

A quick scan for the moment but saved.

I showed the nurse yesterday, the tattoo at the base of my skull of vitamin B12 and the reference to vitamin B6.

My brother in law is a biomedical scientist who teaches medical students anatomy and physiology.

I am a working progress to be a ‘walking’ textbook. I just hope I do not eaten by a giant bear. 😂🤣

Very useful, thank you!I know I need money knowledge on B1 and B6 but don't get the spare time these days (because I'm reasonably well and active) to stop and look them up.

Having this "fed" to me has been great!

PS I knew it would be good and worth reading, coming from you. Excellent, thank you.

I like this bit: ‘If the amount of B12 does not cover the demand (which is significantly increased during nerve regeneration and myelin formation), not only can important proteins (e.g. the myelin basic protein) not be generated but also homocysteine accumulates and promotes oxidative stress and damage’.

It does also reassure why we take bcomplex too.

Excellent MrsTuft,

Oxidative stress is not stress such as the car broke down, money worries etc 😘

Sorry for the duplication. I don't have an online computer. Phones are useful for phone things, but are not that good for word processing or document management. So I don't have a useful record even of the articles I have posted links to.
