Starting B12 injections, how often?

Hello everybody, I will be receiving my first B12 injection next week. My blood test results were as follows folate 3.4ug/L, ferritin 19.9ug/L and B12 218ug/L before any medication. I started on iron and folate tablets a week ago. What I'm wondering is how often should I be getting the B12 injection after the first one? (I am in Ireland). Thank you

Thr protocol here Is 6 loading doses over 2 weeks .Almost one every other day

Some countries give 6

One a week.

Loading doses are necessary.

Then maintenence 2- 3 monthly.

Most need a higher frequency to manage symptond.

B12 usually first then folate

Good iron started to raise ferritin.

Was your overall iron okay ?

Hope it goes well.

Some get improvements quickly.

Some get worse before better.

Depends on the severity of symptons .

Usually a IFAB test is done before the first B12 injection .

If positive you have PA.

If negative you mat still have PA as this test only picks up 50% of those with PA

Thank you so much for your advice/info, the treatments seem to differ country to country. Maybe it's just a once off injection I am getting as my B12 was low but not under the levels for here which is under 206 . All other bloods were good. Also I haven't had a IFAB test done. Maybe I need to request that, should that be done before I take the B12 injection and would the iron tablets and folate tablets I am taking now effect the result?

No.The IFAB test could be affected by high b12 levels but not other things.

Push to get it done *before*

B12 injections.

Also a loading dose should be given on symptoms alone.

A one off injection 💉 solves little.

Look at local guidelines.

I can't say whether or not anything has changed, but Ireland used to follow British rules in everything medical.

I don’t know your health system or if you have the NICE guidelines, but they say that initial injections should be six over alternate days UNTIL THERE IS NO FURTHER IMPROVEMENT. And that is important. Don’t stop them until you feel improved, no matter how long that takes.
