Can anyone make sense of these results for me please?

I was ferritin level 6ugL (23-300) in September. It has rose which I'm happy about but I'm still incredibly symptomatic, I don't really understand blood test readings, can anyone shed some light on it?

Serum Ferritin level (XE24r) 26ug/L (23-300)

Serum Iron Level (X76tH) 14.1umol/L (9.0-30.4)

Serum Transferrin Level (XE2dx) 2.28g/L (2.0-3.2)

Transferrin Saturation Index 25% (16.0-45.0)

Ferritin takes months while to go up.I was told to keep it above 50 ug/L

My symptoms were restless legs

Breathless

And shaky with some hair loss.

My last test result just got to 52ug/L

Was okay on 40+ and finding the right maintenence dose of iron.

Has to be looked at with othef iron results and not in isolation

However a good indication as a form of storage low ferritin levels can mimic thyroid problems too

Folate and vitamin d shoukd be tested too.

Once on b12 injections, pointless doing level as will be high.

Problem is most labs do folate with b12 .

.

Thank you Nackapan for your reply.

Yes I have the same symptoms, along with depression and anxiety too. My hair has gone really thin, my inner eyelids are still white aswell as my gums.

I don't really understand blood test readings, i don't understand the saturation things either.

I have had my thyroid tested, doctors said everything was normal regarding that.

My B12 was 300ngl, In range but low.

They didn't perform a holotc like requested unfortunately.

I still feel all the symptoms, even though Dr says I'm now in range.

I don't understand them all either. They should be explained.

Was your folate and vit D tested .

If there's one absorbtion problem often other things are affected .

Your b12 even 'in range ' may not be reaching cell level.

So if symptoms persist and nothing else found to treat .

Consider functional b12 deficiency with your doctor

nackapan has very good questions here. I though I was having a problem with iron because one of these labs was off but never a combination. If the doc or that web site I mention don’t seem to think you have a problem with iron then maybe it’s the B12, D, folate or some other deficiency throwing off your iron tests. My issue was the b12 and b1.

Basically look at a braid picture as well.

testing.com has great explanations on these iron tests as they are tricky. There different results depending on the various permutations of the results from the combination of tests they do, but this site simplifies it.

Example:

Go to the testing results. There is a table that spells out the various combinations and the respective meaning of each permutations in the results.

For those in the UK, LabTestOnline labtestsonline.org.uk/ is often a better bet.

(Testing.com used to operate as labtestsonline.org - I do not know why they diverged from that name/branding.)
