B12/crohns update

My friend who had stroke a few weeks ago, caught covid in hospital a couple of weeks ago. Now back at home, due to having stroke she was expected to inject herself with warfarin morning and night..... not one District nurse has been to help, she has had to rely on someone from the village to inject her, as she has no use in her right hand.

BUT.... yes at last they are giving her B12 injections.... once a week ! She must have lost 3/4 stone in weight !

She said she is very breathless and very weak, because she is so anaemic.

She has had to have magnesium and god knows what and still on numerous medications.

She phoned this afternoon and said the district nurse is coming out thursday... to check on her and give her b12 Injection.

She said the hospital was horrendous and that she is far better at home. The only one that has been of any help was a nurse who seen her when she first went in and phoned her to say that she is going to get the hospital to sort things out with her surgery.

I really dont know what's going on, only that communication seems to be lacking between hospital and surgeries.

The whole NHS needs reorganisation!

Why have they not implemented B12 sooner I will never Know !........

Your poor friend, that is dreadful! I do agree that the NHS needs reorganisation, indeed I fear for the future of it. Apologies that this is not B12 related, please look away because I'm going to rant. Last week my son went to hospital for a 3 hour operation, due to complications it took 6 hours. He returned to the ward at 8pm. At 9 am the following morning, without seeing anyone who could tell him what the 'complications' were (it seems the consultant who operated only worked one day a week for the NHS) he was discharged, with no idea what had been done to him under a leg full of bandages, still being sick, slurring and incredibly groggy! Really.... what is happening to our NHS?

in reply toBaggy8

How can they discharge someone like that !

They simply dont care. As far as the NHS are concerned the operation Is done. No thought about after care or communicating with the patient, how is anybody supposed to recover without knowing anything about treatment received.

"What is happening to our NHS? " ....... well you can understand why people would avoid it as much as possible.. If I knew I had to go into hospital I think I might have a heart attack just thinking about it..... terrifying!

I do hope your Son improves and gets to know what's what !

Oh my goodness Sallyannl,

I’m so sorry to hear more about your neighbour, I’ll refer to her as Marilyn (just I don’t want to use she throughout) what she has suffered and is still experiencing. I wish patient’s were also given a copy of their discharge summary. So, what has happened and what on-going care is needed from their GP (district nurses, physiotherapy etc) medication.

It’s pretty neglectful if they expected her to SI warfarin. Thank goodness for other helpers.

I do hope that Marilyn is able to recover quickly with B12, being short of breath is horrible plus the fatigue.

Sending my very best wishes.

I'm just frustrated at the negligence of the NHS and B12 deficiency and appropriate treatment. IT was quite clear she had a deficiency (maybe border line) but a deficiency all the same. It's taken over a week to get a district nurse, if that is what boris Johnson thinks is the best health service in the world well I dont know !

That is so terrible for your friend!!! Stroke can also be as result of severe B12 deficiency . To send her home with still having half her body not functional that is wrong! She need more then 1 injection a week, loading dose for a long time making sure she gets all the cofactors, so get her other B vitamins and minerals like magnesium, selenium and molybdenum as well as her vitamin D checked. Vitamin B12 injections only work well if there is no deficiency in vitamin B2 they all work together to keep body ticking over.
