Candida anyone?

Hi. I wasn’t really sure where to post this but have been having health issues for several years. I have been diagnosed with vitamin deficiencies in the past and have regular B12 injections and vitamin D tablets. However, I think now I’m either diabetic or have some kind of candida overgrowth. I have fatigue, brain fog, pins and needles, I go dizzy and weak after eating anything sugar, feel generally really unwell and have constant vaginal yeast infections. I have also had oral thrush several times. I am scared I may be diabetic. I did a self blood test and my blood sugar was 9.4 which I think is borderline, so I’m worried. Also, if candida, how do you cure it, is there a medication you can take or is it all that diet where you cut out gluten, sugar and alcohol (so hard). Any advice would be appreciated as I just don’t know what to do for the best and am so unwell.

Your blood sugar is the most likely cause of your thrush . See your doctor snd have full bloods done.

Go from there.

Discuss your concerns

I've had oral thrush for the first time and b12 deficient buf I'd had antibiotics

You cannot diagnose diabetes from a single blood test. Your levels can rise and fall from less to 6 to above 12 in a single day. The only way to test for sure is an HbA1c test. This looks at your blood glucose over the last few months. If your 9.4 was fasting in the morning then you're probably pre-diabetic, at least.

Phone your doctor and insist on this test.

I got oral thrush when I took antibiotics to kill of H. pylori. I went to see the pharmacist and they gave me something to get rid of it, which worked really well.

I agree with fbirder. Also make sure to have them check for all the other things iron deficiency, thyroid, thyroid antibodies, b12, folate, ferritin, vit d and anything that might explain your condition.

Thank you both. I will insist on test. Really worried.

Hi HayleyI haven’t seen many testimonies about it, but at least 3 and with mine it makes 4 : I have constant vaginal yeast infections while on b12. It is rare, and this happens when you already have other risk factors, but it happens. My gastro MD just confirmed me that b12 is a growth factor for candida. It isn’t well known, but it is true and I had to stop b12 due to candida overgrowth.

Amchampart, not sure why you were taking B12 but if you have a B12 absorption problem like PA which means you can't absorb B12 from your diet then you do need to find another way of getting B12. I am assuming that whatever the reason you had for taking B12 it wasn't due to an absorption problem.

I had very low b12 Levels despite oral treatment, so I had to self inject. But i did it every day, and it was probably too much.

Hi,

Blood sugar readings of 7.5mmol/l taken two hours after eating indicate borderline T2 diabetes.

I am T1 and have suffered in the past. My recommendation is to treat the infection with over the counter meds and then take probiotics daily, to help the flora in your gut. If your bloods are remaining higher than ideal, then cutting down on all the main carb groups - bread, pasta, rice, potatoes will help.

Lowering carbs and increasing fruit and veg should also improve sugar cravings. I have cut out gluten this week and have been obliged to cut out most craving foods. My sugar cravings have decreased massively. In the space of a week, I’ve had one piece of chocolate, one dessert and two sweets which for me is nothing.

Hi, I'd agree about the blood sugar affecting the thrush. It would probably be a good idea to get yourself a glucose monitor (I have a Tee2+ from Spirit - cheap and very easy to use) and record your fasting and post-meal levels to take back to your GP. HbA1c gives you an average so won't show you the peaks and troughs (and may vary depending on your red blood cells, as it is based on average RBC lifespan) Changing your diet to help get your blood sugar under control will help the thrush. Micki Rose's Candida Plan might be useful - here is the page if you want to have a read purehealthclinic.co.uk/cand....

Thank you. I am going to book a GP appt tomorrow, and have taken flucanazole and eating plenty of yoghurt. I checked my blood sugar again this morning and it was 6. The day it was 9.4 I had had 3 glasses of wine and a lot of chocolate the night before???? Not overweight or anything.

I've wondered if I have Candida. I did a stool test through a functional medic but that was negative.

Diet would be low carb and avoid things like mushrooms and yeast.

I recommend reading the Plant Paradox for pins and needles after eating. It outlines which foods have lectins and other things that irritate.

Thank you. I have heard that to get rid of candida you need to cut out sugar, gluten, mushrooms and alcohol. I will try to cut down as much as I can but it’s so hard!

I used to have recurring thrush infections and the diet thing definitely worked for me. I cut out any added sugar, yeast and artificial sweeteners (they’re really bad for it apparently) on the advice of a pharmacist. I did it for a couple of months I think and that was about 15 years ago and it has never returned.
