Vitamin K and D

Hi,

I've been supplementing vitamin D for a while (before the pandemic) and have added vitamin K. Because I had a lot of vitamin D tablets to use up, I bought vitamin K separately. I'm not sure however how much is safe or appropriate to take. The ones I have are 100mcg which seems like a lot. I've been halving them but should I take the full tablet?

I'm also unsure about how much vitamin D to take! I started on 10mcg which is what the NHS recommends, but increased it to 20mcg. I notice many supplements on sale are of much higher amounts, but I'm wary of taking high doses. I don't know my levels but I live in Scotland and in the warmer months, I do go out but avoid staying in the sun for long because I get a rash (can't remember the name but it's a sun induced reaction... only on my neck and chest so I have to wear sunscreen even if only outside for a few minutes). The sun also gives me a headache! 😫

I have been feeling tired more often but no idea why, could just be stress about Covid etc, so in the absence of any other explanation I have increased the frequency of my B12 injections. I also take folic acid 400mcg daily.

That dose is fine if you havent an absorbtion problem. I need to take 1000mg daily of vit D and am still just under range going by bloods. It is best to get a level done and go by that. I started to take vitamin k mark 7 and like you unsure of dose.

I now have reduced it to 50mcg as break them in half.

Vitamin D Best taken with your fattest meal or bought in oil.

I recently bought s spray with d and k

combined

I'm not keen on the taste but I know others get on fine with it.

Grassroots is an informative website but you need to know your levels.

If at all possible have a vitamin D bloodtest. You can do this privately if your practice refuse you to have one. Overdosing on vitamin D can be giving you painful symptoms just as not having enough. However taking the minimum dose as is recommended during winter month should not cause you any harm. Only you don’t really know if that amount is enough and the only way to find out is having a blood test.
