Hi Guys, any thoughts on the Covid jab? there seems to be some uncertainty if people with an autoimmune disease should risk it.

Although pernicious anaemia is an autoimmune condition , as long as you are getting sufficient injections of vitamin B12 to keep symptoms at bay , you are not suffering from it. But as we know from this forum , many people with P.A. are not getting sufficient injections , and are still experiencing exhaustion etc .

My mother is due her second jab on Tuesday. So far she has not had a text telling her it's been postponed.

When she asked me about it (as I am a scientist) I told her that I could see the sense in it.

Let's say they can do 500,000 vaccinations in a week. In three weeks that's 1.5 million people. Then they start giving all those people their second jab. In six weeks they've still done 1.5 million people.

Alternatively, they can give an extra 1.5 million people their first jab..

Apparently the BioNTech vaccine gives 90% protection after one jab and 95% after two.

In scenario 1 you have 1.5 million people with 95% protection. In scenario 2 you have 3 million people with 90% protection.

I know which sounds best to me.

The only semi-valid objections I've read to doing this are that the single jab hasn't been safety tested! But I cannot imagine a scenario where half a dose of anything can be more dangerous that a full dose.

More valid is the question of whether GPs should be wasting their time trying to contact the hundreds of thousands of people who have had one dose to tell them that their second one has been postponed. Time that could be better used by actually sticking needles into people.

I read the other day that some consider a longer interval might actually enhance protection. Though that remains to be shown beyond all reasonable doubt.

12bars - as far as I am aware PA shouldn't be an issue. My understanding about concerns was more focused on allergic reactions - there were a few people who responded badly to initial jabs and the common thread seemed to be allergic reactions and the need to carry epi-pens.

I would really suggest talking to your GP/whoever is providing the injection if you have concerns but the evidence does seem to be that the vaccine is safe and effective and the only real option for getting out of this current mess. The cycle of outbreaks will only be broken when enough people have been inoculated against the virus.

Thanks for your question but I am closing this post to further responses to prevent responses that are off-topic for the forum.
