Folate levels very low

Hi could I ask some advice about folate levels.

They still seem to be dropping despite supplementing With 400 once daily would this be caused by my husband supplementing b12 tablets? I’ve also increased his green veg but his levels are very low. Blood test back this week show levels of

1.87 uh/l (range 3.89-19.45)

It has dropped from 2.25 uh/l in January I had expected it to increase.

It may be that your husband has a particularly bad problems absorbing folate so may need to take a higher dose but I'd suggest consulting with GP/pharmacist. If the tests were done as a home kit then it could also be that the results you are getting aren't quite as accurate as they could be.

Good morning Gambit62 this was part of his medichecks blood tests each time.

I’ll arrange for him to take copies down to gp for further advice as you suggest thank you x

As his folate levels have both been out of range the GP will probably prescribe higher doses to get his levels up.

No taking B12 cannot affect folate levels.

Is your husband on any other medication? Some, such as methotrexate, can reduce folate levels. People taking that are advised to take folinic acid as a supplement.

Hi thank you.he takes ramipril would that effect his folate.?

His latest bloods came back saying kidney function not as good as could be which I think could be the ramipril and his folate / b12 Levels low and low normal even though he’s been supplementing for about three months now, maybe we should double up his 400 I struggle to get him anywhere near a gp.

No, there's no reports of ramipril affecting folate levels.

While there's no good reason why folic acid shouldn't be absorbed, it might be worth trying methylfolate or folinic acid. Doubling to dose to 800 mcg a day should be OK. But I would try to get a GP to discuss it forst.

Brilliant thank you. for the advice much appreciated.

It’s solgar folate (as metafolin )400 ug ive been giving him.Ive got to make his heart check up appointment so I’ll tell him to discuss his folate etc with gp.Hes hard work lol,the typical reluctant patient.

Many thanks take care.
